RESOLUTION TO CHANGE NAME OF BEDFORD DRIVE
TO BRISTLECONE LANE
the Public Safety Committee the street name of Bedford
BE IT RESOLVED that upon the recommendation of
Drive in Hale Park West Subdivision is hereby re-named
Bristlecone Lane.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution
not take effect until June 1, 1975.

of the City of Muskego submitted to this office his
intention to veto Resolution 8136-74 which was adopted
by the Common Council on August 13, 1974.

On August 13, 1974, your Honorable Body adopted Resolution
#136-74 which changed the name of Bedford Drive to Bristlecone
Lane.

You will recall that that proposal generated a considerable
amount of opposition from all of the residents along Bedford Drive
and as a result of that opposition the matter was deferred in order
that the Public Safety Committee could meet with the residents to
explain the city's position.
If one looks at the street map of the city showing the
extension of Bristlecone Lane and Bedford Drive into the new Hale
Park Meadows Subdivision logic dictates the advisability of a
single name for the street which connects Sherwood Circle and
Jaeger Place. It is also difficult to argue that the street name
could improve police, fire and rescue service to the residents
now living on Bedford Drive. With these two motives in mind I
do not object to the proposal to change the name of Bedford Drive
to Bristlecone Lane although I sometimes wonder how protective
a city's government should be.
However, I am concerned about the time allowed for the proposed
street name change. Some of you may recall that when the city pro-
posed to change the name of a portion of Southern Heights Drive to
Hedgewood Drive several month's grace period was granted. It is
for this reason that I have chosen to veto Resolution $1136-74 in
the hope that either another resolution making the effective date
six months after adoption or that the original resolution would be
reconsidered and amended to provide the six month's grace period.
This proposed street name change is the first of many that
will be proposed by the Safety Committee and since most changes
will bring cries of indignation, frustration, etc., it seems to
me the least we can do is soften the blow.
I respectfully request that you uphold this veto.
