Reference Update (from Samantha Quail - Head of Reference, Eileen Castro - Adult Services Librarian, Jolyn Lobe and Laura Boeck - Reference Assistants): The Friends of the Library held their 6th annual Garden Walk on Saturday June 27. Patrons could tour three beautiful local gardens, as well as hear speakers, purchase art and bake sale goods, and participate in a raffle and gift card trellis at the Library. The Friends sold 209 tickets and raised over $8,000. Waukesha County's Land Resources Division lent us an interactive display for the month of June. Library visitors had fun using the display to learn about storm drains and the effect of debris on water conservation. We had 19 participants in the Bead Bracelet workshop on June 17, led by the Loose Bead Society. There were 31 participants in the Memory Cafe on June 9. Attendees enjoyed blind sampling different brands of ice cream to determine which was best. Winners were Kemps for chocolate and Edy's for vanilla. Upcoming adult programs for the next few weeks include: • Muskego Matinee on Thursdays, July 16 and August 20. • Cup of Health: Self -Care on Thursday, July 23. • Chain Reaction Crochet Group on Thursdays, July 23 and August 13. • Cemeteries of Walworth County on Thursday, July 30. • Brews & Books Book Club on Tuesday, August 4. • How to Prepare for Disaster on Wednesday, August 12. ALA Conference Reports The American Library Association conference was held in Chicago in June, and Sam and Ann went to visit the exhibit hall on Saturday, June 27. Sam had this to say about the experience: Visiting the exhibit hall at ALA was a great opportunity. The hall is a huge gathering place for library vendors — there were 643 exhibitors spanning everything from publishing, office supplies, furniture, technology, software, and 15 programming. Ann and I primarily focused on technology improvements, and met with several vendors who offer Wi-Fi hotspots, mobile printing, and collection analysis tools. One of the items in this year's action plan is to research holds lockers, and we saw demonstrations and got contact information from 5 different companies who offer this service. The hall also had stages where vendors would present, and we attended sessions about finding 'clean and wholesome' romance publishers, a panel discussion from four libraries who added holds lockers and their implementation experiences, and software demonstrations on a grant funding research tool for nonprofits and a collection analysis tool that rates how likely a book is to circulate at your library based on similar titles in the collection. Ann had this to share about her experience: I spent the day at McCormick Place in Chicago, IL, with Sam Quail exploring and interacting with vendors at the ALA Marketplace (exhibition hall for the ALA Conference). We attended presentations on highlighted products sponsored by vendors including Brodart, Biblioteca, and Candid. We also heard a presentation by the author Stephanie Mack. Most of the day was spent browsing vendor booths, gathering informational flyers and interacting with vendor reps. Highlights included researching various holds locker options, new print release options, checking in with Ingram regarding possibly consolidating invoices and what options are available, discovering a possible new hot spot wireless provider, learning about a new collection development analytics tool, and sourcing new supply vendors. We will follow up with the vendors whose products are of the most interest right away such as Kajeet for hot spot service and Brodart's collection development analytics tool. With new copiers possibly being sourced in 2027, we can share print release information with IT to include in the search process. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to attend the ALA Marketplace. Seeing products in person, being able to use/test them in real time, being able to speak with vendor reps to ask questions and get immediate information was so helpful. 2. Children's Update (from Emma McClure — Children's Librarian, Courtney Metko and Stephanie Simmons - Reference Assistants): During the first month of summer reading, the children's department has held many fun programs. Every Monday, we have had a different performer, our first was Malia Chow from Na Hale Studios, who taught our 154 attendees about Polynesian culture and gave everyone a Hula dance lesson. The next week, Cattail Critters Mobile Zoo introduced families to a Patagonian cavy, a continental giant rabbit, a blonde baby raccoon, and an armadillo. This was our most popular program so far, 224 people attended and loved getting to pet the animals afterwards. Our most recent performer was the comedy duo Kidsplay, who made parents and children alike laugh with their silly fitness routine. Every Tuesday, we have held our summer storytime series either in the library's amphitheater or at Bluhm Park. Our Prehistoric Artists, Rock Out at the Library, and Stuffie Sleepover programs were also popular with patrons. Since June 5, 890 children aged 6-11 and 403 children aged 0-5 have signed up for summer reading. 16 "1R k W" 3. Young Adult Update (from Amanda Hyland - Young Adult and Marketing Librarian): During the month of June 244 teens signed up for the Teen Summer Reading Program. A total of 22,460 minutes have been read. Programs have been well attended, as they have enjoyed creating with perler beads at Just Craftin Around, experienced foods from different countries at the Universal Yums Club, and played games on the Library's VR headsets at Adventures in VR. There are several passive programs in the Teen Area including scavenger hunts, puzzles, and the ever popular break-in bags. 4. Circulation Update (from Jane Matusinec - Circulation Supervisor): We had our second biggest circulation check out day since the start of summer reading! 1288 items were checked out on Monday, July 6, and our book return was overflowing after our 4th of July weekend. (Our biggest day is still the very first day of summer reading, June 15, with 1353 checkouts.) Our summer-themed book display has been very successful, needing to be replenished daily. Beach reads, fishing advice, summer recipes —it's all there for the taking. The circulation staff has started an exercise group to increase motivation, build team spirit and improve our health. The "Bookin' It" group meets once a week to try out different library exercise DVDs and get fit at the same time. `IN 5. Other Updates: a. Trustee Handbook Training TE8: Developing the Library Budget Sources of Funding 18 - Public library service in Wisconsin is provided through cooperative efforts at the state, public library system, and county and local level. The bulk of the funding for most Wisconsin public libraries is provided by the municipality or county that established the library. - Counties must reimburse libraries within the county or in an adjacent county for at least 70% of the cost of service to county residents who do not live in a library municipality. Payment requests must be submitted by July 1. Requests should be submitted to the county clerk, but some library system or county library services coordinate the requests. Municipalities can exempt themselves from the county library tax if they tax themselves for library service at a higher tax levy rate than the county. - Fines may be a source of library revenue, but the policy of charging fines is the subject of debate concerning their effectiveness in encouraging the return of materials, and concerning their public relations effects. In establishing a fine policy, a library board should consider not only the possible revenue but also the potential negative public relations effects. - Under Wisconsin law, public libraries may not charge fees for information- providing services. Fees and charges for such things as making computer printouts and using a copy machine are legal. Most fees, charges, and sales by public libraries are subject to the Wisconsin sales tax and any county and special sales taxes. For details, see Sales Tax and Public Libraries. - Grants and gifts can be an excellent source of supplementary funds for special projects. In addition, community citizens are often willing to make significant donations to cover part or all of the costs of a new or remodeled library building. - Grants or donations should never be used to justify reducing or replacing the community's commitment to public funding. Donors will quit donating, volunteers will quit working, and granting organizations will quit awarding grants to your library if they see that their efforts are resulting in reduced public funding for the library instead of improved service. 19 Monthly Statistics for Muskego Public Library 2026 JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEPT OCT NOV DEC TOTAL JUN YTD Checkouts (physical, patron circ by stat class) 2019 21,785 21,507 24,231 23,645 21,420 26,506 30,895 26,132 21,640 22,944 20,647 18,821 280,173 139,094 2025 19,453 18,742 22,506 20,147 19,089 25,089 26,259 19,833 18,468 19,267 17,221 17,295 243,369 125,026 2026 18,721 17,336 20,750 18,329 17,660 24,979 117,775 117,775 26 vs 25% Change (3.8%) (7.5%) (7.8%) (9.0%) (7.5%) (0.4%) (51.6%) (5.8%) Overdrive Checkouts (E-books, E-Audio, E-Video, E-Magazines) 2019 2,247 2,119 2,302 2,198 2,232 2,262 2,455 2,351 2,312 2,358 2,220 2,202 27,258 13,360 2025 4,583 4,138 4,705 4,378 4,514 4,463 4,761 4,459 4,333 4,860 4,542 4,946 54,682 26,781 2026 5,608 4,779 5,333 5,031 5,206 5,207 31,164 31,164 26 vs 25% Change 22.4% 15.5% 28.9% 14.9% 15.3% 16.7% (43.0%) 16.4% Kanopy Play Withdrawal KANOPY 2019 21 29 53 41 75 54 44 62 5 59 53 605 273 KANOPY 2025 122 59 81 73 48 47 50 64 56 77 804 430 KANOPY 2025 1 64 56 77 8 KANOPY 2026 93 68 79 59 68 83 0 450 KANOPY 2026 4 450 26 vs 25 %Change (23.8%) 15.3% (2.5%) (19.2%) 41.7% 76.6% (44.0%) 4.7% Owning Holds Shipped 2019 3,296 2,872 2,914 2,669 2,670 2,975 3,148 2,811 3,107 2,980 2,902 2,495 34,839 17,396 2025 3,644 3,011 3,396 3,163 3,012 3,288 3,499 3,169 3,449 3,949 3,451 3,504 40,535 19,514 2026 3,735 3,368 3,344 3,081 2,864 3,408 19,800 19,800 26 vs 25% Change 2.5% 11.9% (1.5%) (2.6%) (4.9%) 3.6% (51.2%) 1.5% Self -Service Transaction Percentage of Total Circ (Self -check, Online Renewals, and eBook Checkouts/Checkouts and eBook Checkouts) 2019 56.4% 60.6% 62.5% 63.0% 65.6% 63.3% 65.1% 65.2% 66.6% 62.9% 64.0% 65.3% 63.4% 61.9% 2025 75.7% 71.7% 74.3% 76.1% 75.3% 74.1% 73.5% 77.3% 74.5% 75.5% 77.0% 76.9% 72.8% 74.5% 2026 75.7% 76.0% 74.5% 77.7% 78.0% 75.3% 76.1% 76.1% Curbside Pickups 2025 1 0 1 2 4 0 0 3 2 5 0 1 19 8 2026 2 0 0 0 0 0 2 2 26 vs 25% Change 100.0% 0.0% (100.0%) (100.0%) (100.0%) 0.0% (89.5%) (75.0%) Library Visits 2019 10,151 11,418 12,525 13,775 10,701 14,463 14,851 13,447 10,803 12,373 11,118 10,601 146,224 73,033 2025 11,426 11,312 13,167 12,060 13,160 18,226 19,032 10,946 13,931 14,380 11,977 12,901 162,518 79,351 2026 14,751 14,191 14,926 13,721 14,395 20,321 92,305 92,305 26 vs 25% Change 29.1% 25.5% 13.4% 13.8% 9.4% 11.5% 16.3% Reference Transactions (DPI defined) 2019 1,182 1,123 1,067 995 1,002 1,211 1,331 1,215 1,171 1,118 987 878 13,280 6,580 2025 951 881 967 912 935 1,060 941 869 940 928 764 709 10,857 5,706 2026 910 1,004 988 813 853 1,123 5,691 5,691 26 vs 25% Change (4.3%) 14.0% 2.2% (10.9%) (8.8%) 5.9% (47.6%) (0.3%) Technical/Other Information Transactions 2019 0 576 528 427 492 3,152 4,030 1,362 481 536 450 346 12,380 5,175 2025 809 749 835 837 669 3,791 3,280 1,686 859 837 759 826 15,937 7,690 2026 1,217 1,036 1,145 1,342 1,136 5,633 11,509 11,509 26 vs 25% Change 50.4% 38.3% 37.1% 60.3% 69.8% 48.6% (27.8%) 49.7% Meeting Room Use 2019 78 89 107 97 91 87 87 68 78 96 106 78 1,062 549 2025 77 107 100 92 97 85 87 84 87 102 78 71 1,067 558 2026 78 73 85 93 84 83 496 496 26 vs 25% Change 1.3% (31.8%) (15.0%) 1.1% (13.4%) (2.4%) (53.5%) (11.1%) CJ + D D + i1 Il /1i. /• ' Background on Part -Time Children's Assistant job Description We have an opening that will be occurring for our part-time Children's Assistant position. Employee's Signature Date Approved by the Library Board — XXXX Supervisor's Signature Date 26 Background on the 2027 Operating Budget The operating budget is funded by the City and covers the revenue and expenditure from daily business functions of the library. Large categories within the operating budget include wages, benefits, maintenance, housekeeping, library materials, supplies, equipment, computer hardware/software charges and continuing education. The City requests a proposed operating budget for the upcoming year. This budget is built by looking at historical trends (past three years), examining future needs brought from the strategic planning process, and examining inflation and rate increases from services, materials, and utilities. The City Finance Department will provide the final numbers needed for wages and benefits, but due to anticipated cost of living increases this category will be higher than 2026. The areas where budget lines have seen a larger change from 2026 are: Print and AV Materials: We are right sizing based on the expenditures of the last three years. Electronic Materials: Adjusting for anticipated growth in our digital library advantage account. Maintenance of Building and Grounds: Adjusting for inflation. Housekeeping Services: This is an anticipated cost increase per the three-year contract the City signed. Gas & Electric: Adjusted for anticipated rate hike in 2027. Conferences & Training: Adjusted for inflation and to get two more staff to annual training. Library Equipment: Adjusted for inflation and printing. Computer Charges: Adjusted for inflation and staff internet changes. Library Friends Expense: The Friends have transitioned to a debit card system, so this budget line is able to be reduced. Currently the proposed 2027 Library Operating Budget is a 2.4% increase from 2026. This document includes budget actuals from the 2025 year (as you reviewed and approved from the state annual report in February) as well as the adopted library budget numbers approved by City Council for 2026. The Board approved this in April, but we recently received updated Indirect Cost numbers (previously used was the average of the past three years). The difference is +$2,962.
