Reference Update (from Samantha Quail - Head of Reference, Eileen Castro - Adult Services Librarian, Jolyn Lobe and Laura Boeck - Reference Assistants): We had 26 attendees for the June Cleaver: Mothers Who Made History program on May 13. The spring Crafternoon series ended with Beaded Plant Stakes on May 18. We had 71 total participants in the Crafternoon programs from January -May. Our Thursday Movie Matinees so far this year have had 79 attendees. Free popcorn and candy will be given out during our summer matinees to hopefully bring even more people in. Bridges runs an annual summer program that encourages patrons to visit the different branches in the system. This year's theme is a Bigfoot Scavenger Hunt and will run June 1 - August 21. Participants locate the Bigfoot poster at each library and record the name on their map, then get a stamp and a raffle ticket for a gift card drawing at the end of summer. Our Bigfoot's name is Tala Pagewalker, and she is sharing fun facts about our community garden. Summer Reading kicked off on Friday, June 5, at Jammin' in the Park. We had 465 people stop by our booth to spin the wheel for a piece of candy, learn about the Friends Garden Walk, and of course, to register for Summer Reading! We offer reading challenges for all ages — at Jammin' we had 76 adults, 36 teens, 81 kids 6-11, and 57 kids 0-5 register. Lego Club the following day brought in lots of families to sign up as well. As of Monday, June 8, our registration total was 688! 0 1 "Wr 16 Upcoming adult programs for the next few weeks include: • Beaded Bracelet Workshop on Wednesday, June 17. • Muskego Matinee on Thursdays, June 18 and July 2. • Chain Reaction Crochet Group on Thursdays, June 25 and July 9. • Friends of the Library 6th Annual Garden Walk on Saturday, June 27. • Brews & Books Book Club on Tuesday, July 7. • Memory Cafe: Ice Cream Taste Test on Thursday, July 9. 2. Children's Update (from Emma McClure — Children's Librarian, Courtney Metko and Stephanie Simmons - Reference Assistants): The last month in the children's department has been dedicated to preparing for the summer reading program. Staff and volunteers prepared booklets, coupon bundles, and calendars so they were ready to go for our Summer Reading Kick off at Jammin' in the Park. In addition to prep work, Children's staff also visited Lakeview and Mill Valley Elementary Schools and Lake Denoon and Muskego Lakes Middle Schools to explain how the program works and get kids excited. Bay Lane Elementary School had a walking field trip to the library on June 4th and got to see our prize table along with learning about the program. The first Lego Club of the summer was on June 6th, and we had 83 people attend; kids were able to build their own "dinosaur islands" which paired well with our summer reading theme "Unearth a Story." Over 300 kids signed up for the summer reading program in the first three days! We have many fun programs coming up this month including a Hula presentation from Na Hale Studios and an animal presentation from Cattail Critters. 3. Young Adult Update (from Amanda Hyland - Young Adult and Marketing Librarian): In May, teen programing and activities took a break as we ramped up for summer reading. Amanda visited Lake Denoon as part of her school visits to share about the teen summer reading program. Amanda also finalized her activities and programs for the teen summer reading program, which will include a weekly puzzle challenge in the Teen Area (week 1 is a shikaku puzzle), a library wide scavenger hunt (June's theme is Toy Story), tie dye and perler bead crafts, and the ever popular Universal Yums! As of June 8, we had 107 teens registered for the summer reading program. 4. Circulation Update (from Jane Matusinec - Circulation Supervisor): Foot traffic is definitely picking up with the official start of Summer Reading. Circulation staff created 24 new cards and updated about 90 cards since Friday's kickoff on June 5. Patrons noticed us all wearing our "The Library Is My Happy Place" t-shirts. As children sign up for new library cards, we offer them a lanyard kit with string and beads to make a necklace or bracelet for the library keychain card. It's a fun way to celebrate their first library card experience. Even big kids like getting a bead kit. We are fortunate to be fully staffed going into summer. Our newest circ team members, Cindy and Keri, are doing great! 18 5. Other Updates: a. Dates of Note: The next Library Board meeting is Tuesday, July 21, 2026 at 5:30 PM in the City Council Chambers. i. The library building will be closed July 3rd and 4tn b. Friends of the Library: The next Friends First Friday Coffee will be July 10tn at 9:30 AM (offset due to library closure on July 3rd) i. The Friends Board meeting will be Monday, July 13tn at 10:00 AM. ii. The Garden Walk is happening June 27tn from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. c. Building Updates: i. We had the same pipe burst again, bringing water into the children's program room and two other spaces. Thankfully it was noticed immediately, so no lasting damage was done. Clayton will need to cut the wall open again to get the pipe repaired. ii. We recently discovered that the Hearing Loop in meeting room 4 is damaged. The replacement coil has been ordered. iii. The internet has gone down multiple times since the start of the year. We have purchased devices for our service desk computers to allow them to hook up to Wi-Fi and used some of the grant money from Bridges to purchase a staff only hotspot to be used during outages and also to expand our outreach services. 1. Jake is using a new software called NetSpot, which is collecting signal strength data for both our public and staff Wi-Fi. He will do this multiple times over the next few months, at varying days and times, to get a clearer idea of how our signal strength is managing the use load, along with download and upload speeds. 0 Mbp9 Min down laed speed 75 M6pe Ma# download speed Q Staff Download Speed I I O MSps in upload speed -96 d6m Min slgnal level -10 dB. The repairs were covered under warranty. v. The parking lot project was completed ahead of schedule and with minor impact to library usage. 1. We added two more handicap parking spaces and will be getting fire lane striping along our side lot. vi. We had an electrician out to repair a light pole. He discovered that the cause of the malfunction was a mouse nesting inside the pole chewed through a wire. d. Grant/Outside Funding Updates: i. Sam applied for the Adult Programming Grant through Bridges and was accepted. This was for $450 and covered the cost of the June Cleaver: Mothers Who Made History program on May 13tn ii. We received the Library Innovation and Improvement Grant through Bridges for $3,500. These funds will be used to purchase a hot spot for outages and outreach use, a desktop hearing loop for the reference desk, repair meeting room 4's hearing loop, and install sound mitigation technology in our study rooms. iii. The Friends of the Muskego Public Library are donating funds to install a shade sail over our amphitheater seating and stage area. iv. We applied for the WiLS Ideas to Action grant to fund the set up and initial costs of an animal ambassador program. Winners are announced in September. e. Staff Updates: i. Our new circulation aide, Cindy May, has started and is doing a fantastic job. f. State and Federal Legislation 20 g. Board Education i. There is an updated Trustee Essentials Handbook available online. Published in March of 2026. ii. Trustee Training Week will be happening August 10-13. The email with the registration links will be sent out to the Board following the June meeting. iii. Trustee Handbook Training TEB: Developing the Library Budget 1. The first step in developing a library budget is to look at what the library hopes to accomplish in the next year. The second step is to determine the total financial resources necessary for what the library wants to accomplish in the coming year. Often, increased funding is necessary because of increased costs, increased usage, and/or new services that will be offered. Additional resources for new services can also be made available by shifting resources from a lower priority to a higher priority service. Draft budget documents are prepared by the library director and library staff. The board of trustees will then review the draft budget with the director, propose changes, and finally approve a finished budget. After the written budget documents are approved by the board and submitted to the municipality or county, the final step in the budget process is securing the funding needed to carry out the planned service program. Trustees, as volunteer public representatives, are especially effective budget advocates. Trustees should be involved in presenting, explaining, and supporting the library budget that was approved by the library board. (See also Trustee Essential 13: Library Advocacy.) The board may need to make budget changes if the funding needed to balance the budget is not secured. Budget changes may also be required during the budget year if, for example, certain expenditures are higher than expected, or costs are lower than expected. 21 Monthly Statistics for Muskego Public Library 2026 JAN FEB MAR APR MAY JUN JUL AUG SEPT OCT NOV DEC TOTAL I MAY YTD Checkouts (physical, patron circ by stat class) 2019 21,785 21,507 24,231 23,645 21,420 26,506 30,895 26,132 21,640 22,944 20,647 18,821 280,173 112,588 2025 19,453 18,742 22,506 20,147 19,089 25,089 26,259 19,833 18,468 19,267 17,221 17,295 243,369 99,937 2026 18,721 17,336 20,750 18,329 17,660 92,796 92,796 26 vs 25% Change (3.8%) (7.5%) (7.8%) (9.0%) (7.5%) (61.9%) (7.1%) Overdrive Checkouts (E-books, E-Audio, E-Video, E-Magazines) 2019 2,247 2,119 2,302 2,198 2,232 2,262 2,455 2,351 2,312 2,358 2,220 2,202 27,258 11,098 2025 4,583 4,138 4,705 4,378 4,514 4,463 4,761 4,459 4,333 4,860 4,542 4,946 54,682 22,318 2026 5,608 4,779 5,333 5,031 5,206 25,957 25,957 26 vs 25% Change 22.4% 15.5% 28.9% 14.9% 15.3% (52.5%) 16.3% Kanopy Play Withdrawal KANOPY 2019 21 29 53 41 75 54 44 62 5 59 53 605 219 KANOPY 2025 122 59 81 73 48 47 50 64 55 56 72 77 804 383 KANOPY 2025 122 64 55 56 1. 383 KANOPY 2026 93 68 79 59 68 367 367 KANOPY 2026 5 367 26 vs 25 % Change (23.8%) 15.3% (2.5%) (19.2%) 41.7% (54.4%) (4.2%) Owning Holds Shipped 2019 3,296 2,872 2,914 2,669 2,670 2,975 3,148 2,811 3,107 2,980 2,902 2,495 34,839 14,421 2025 3,644 3,011 3,396 3,163 3,012 3,288 3,499 3,169 3,449 3,949 3,451 3,504 40,535 16,226 2026 3,735 3,368 3,344 3,081 2,864 16,392 16,392 26 vs 25% Change 2.5% 11.9% (1.5%) (2.6%) (4.9%) (59.6%) 1.0% Self -Service Transaction Percentage of Total Circ (Self -check, Online Renewals, and eBook Checkouts/Checkouts and eBook Checkouts) 2019 56.4% 60.6% 62.5% 63.0% 65.6% 63.3% 65.1% 65.2% 66.6% 62.9% 64.0% 65.3% 63.4% 61.6% 2025 75.7% 71.7% 74.3% 76.1% 75.3% 74.1% 73.5% 77.3% 74.5% 75.5% 77.0% 76.9% 72.8% 74.6% 2026 75.7% 76.0% 74.5% 77.7% 78.0% 76.4% 76.4% Curbside Pickups 2025 1 0 1 2 4 0 0 3 2 5 0 1 19 8 2026 2 0 0 0 0 2 2 26 vs 25% Change 100.0% 0.0% (100.0%) (100.0%) (100.0%) (89.5%) (75.0%) Library Visits 2019 10,151 11,418 12,525 13,775 10,701 14,463 14,851 13,447 10,803 12,373 11,118 10,601 146,224 58,570 2025 11,426 11,312 13,167 12,060 13,160 18,226 19,032 10,946 13,931 14,380 11,977 12,901 162,518 61,125 2026 14,751 14,191 14,926 13,721 14,395 71,984 71,984 26 vs 25% Change 29.1% 25.5% 13.4% 13.8% 9.4% 17.8% Reference Transactions (DPI defined) 2019 1,182 1,123 1,067 995 1,002 1,211 1,331 1,215 1,171 1,118 987 878 13,280 5,369 2025 951 881 967 912 935 1,060 941 869 940 928 764 709 10,857 4,646 2026 910 1,004 988 813 853 4,568 4,568 26 vs 25% Change (4.3%) 14.0% 2.2% (10.9%) (8.8%) (57.9%) (1.7%) Technical/Other Information Transactions 2019 0 576 528 427 492 3,152 4,030 1,362 481 536 450 346 12,380 2,023 2025 809 749 835 837 669 3,791 3,280 1,686 859 837 759 826 15,937 3,899 2026 1,217 1,036 1,145 1,342 1,136 5,876 5,876 26 vs 25% Change 50.4% 38.3% 37.1% 60.3% 69.8% (63.1%) 50.7% Meeting Room Use 2019 78 89 107 97 91 87 87 68 78 96 106 78 1,062 462 2025 77 107 100 92 97 85 87 84 87 102 78 71 1,067 473 2026 78 73 85 93 84 413 413 26 vs 25% Change 1.3% (31.8%) (15.0%) 1.1% (13.4%) (61.3%) (12.7%) P* S73W16663 W Janesville Rd Muskego, WI 53150 262.971.2100 Background on 2026 Library Board President Committee Appointments Per Library Board Bylaws, Article V, Section 1, "The President shall make committee appointments at the annual meeting." The Muskego Public Library Board has two standing committees: The Personnel Committee is charged with managing the Library Director's annual evaluation process as well as developing and assigning his or her annual goals. - Historically, this committee meets between October and December and is headed by the President of the Library Board. The Strategic Planning Committee is charged with the continued development of the Library's annual Action Plan as well as managing the strategic planning process. Historically, this committee meets with Kelsey and Sam in the Fall to review and discuss the 2026 Action Plan, as well as help develop the 2027 Action Plan. At the May Board meeting, President Humphreys appointed Trustee Plassmeyer to the Personnel Committee and Trustees Woodward and Wied to the Strategic Planning Committee. Due to some Trustees not being able to attend the May meeting, this topic is being brought back to allow President Humphreys the opportunity to appoint others to these committees. Background on the 2027-2031 Capital Budget Capital projects are funded by the City and are larger projects that are new, an improvement, or maintenance to the facilities. The City requests a five-year capital plan from departments each year to help plan for the future. Examples of past capital projects have been the study pods, carpeting replacement, and the children's area renovation. Due to the building's age we are entering a phase where our capital projects will be focusing on maintenance initiatives that preserve the building for the future. Some of the capital projects in the pipeline are replacing the roof, the library's two air controllers, the boilers, and the parking lot light poles. The capital project schedule is based on project priority and target year recommendations from the city's maintenance department. Per the May 2026 Board meeting, the light poles were moved up a year to 2030 and the bathrooms were added in 2031. Large categories within the operating budget include wages, benefits, maintenance, housekeeping, library materials, supplies, equipment, computer hardware/software charges and continuing education. The City requests a proposed operating budget for the upcoming year. This budget is built by looking at historical trends (past three years), examining future needs brought from the strategic planning process, and examining inflation and rate increases from services, materials, and utilities. The City Finance Department will provide the final numbers needed for wages and benefits, but due to anticipated cost of living increases this category will be higher than 2026. Most other budget line items have been kept relatively flat. The areas where budgets lines have seen a larger change from 2026 are: Print and AV Materials: We are right sizing based on the expenditures of the last three years. Electronic Materials: Adjusting for anticipated growth in our digital library advantage account. Maintenance of Building and Grounds: Adjusting for anticipated improvement and repair projects, along with inflation. Housekeeping Services: This is an anticipated cost increase per the three-year contract the City signed. Computer Charges: Computer costs have increased due to inflation.
