CITY OF MUSKEGO Staff Report to Parks and Conservation Committee To: Parks and Conservation Committee From: Scott Kroeger, PE, PLS, Public Works and Development Director Subject: Updates on Capital Projects 2025 Date: June 17, 2025 Below is a summary of Capital items that were constructed in 2025 • Park Arthur Field #4 will be open for play on June 20, 2025. — It will be used the first time for the Muskego Warriors baseball tournament. INPRO gave a very generous donation for this project. The plan is to shut this field done in early August. This will give the field more time for the grass outfield to mature. The field will be ready for full use starting in April 2026 until October 2026. Page 1 of 6 2 • Idle Isle boat ramp improvements has been completed. The aerial shows the new boat ramp with concrete area for loading and unloading. The north parking lot has been increased and reconfigured to provide a one-way loop. This will be very beneficial to police, emergency services, city employees, and the general public. Page 2 of 6 3 e il • Boxhorn Dredging has been completed. The project was able to dredge approximately 100 feet away from the end of the ramp and 50 feet on either side of the pier. Such items don't require committee action but can certainly be discussed during the Miscellaneous Business portion of the meeting. 1. We have had a good spring with continued high numbers in our programs for kids ages 3-8. Summer programing starts the week of June 16 with large numbers in our youth sports camps and our summer camp. To date the Recreation Department has collected $344,419 in revenue which includes recreation programming as well as Park Arthur turf fees, Annual Boat Launch Passes, Idle Isle Sales and Park Rentals. Of those fees collected $257,759 was for recreation programs alone. 2. We have an intern with our department this summer. Ms. Sarah Walker is a Muskego resident who just graduated from LIW-La Crosse and is finishing the last part of her program by doing her internship with us for 15 weeks this summer. She is getting the opportunity to run a volleyball camp from start to finish including all lesson plans, staffing, supplies and parent interactions. She will also be assisting with Idle Isle Snack Shack, Summer Camp, Park Ranger and will get the opportunity to work with other city departments to see how they work collaboratively with the Recreation Department. Our goal is to give her every opportunity we can to be a successful recreational professional as she starts her career. 3. We are once again partnering with the Wisconsin Parks and Recreation Association to sell discounted tickets to Wisconsin attractions. We are selling tickets to the Milwaukee County Zoo, Noah's Ark, Great America and Mount Olympus. The Recreation Department retains $.75 per ticket sold which goes into our operating budget. Tickets are sold out of the recreation office during our normal business hours. 4. The Idle Isle Snack Shack is now open where we again are selling pre -packaged snacks and renting our kayaks and stand-up paddleboards. We purchased a new fleet of kayaks and paddleboards through the capital budget process this spring and are looking forward to a great season of rentals. We also have yard games that can be rented at Idle Isle or picked up to take to a resident's home. These include large Connect Four, Jenga, and Cornhole. 5. Our All -Day Summer Playground program is almost at capacity for the full camp of 9 weeks, with just a few openings left for the single week options. We take 90 full time children at each site, with 10 weekly children spots at each site. This year we have 176 kids are enrolled for full camp, and currently another 37 kids using the weekly options. 10 Memo To: Parks and Conservation Committee From: Tom Zagar CC: Scott Kroeger, Tammy Dunn, Adam Trzebiatowski, Ryan Beilfuss Date: June 15, 2025 Re: Conservation Coordinator Update Highlights of recent conservation, forestry and lake projects: Control of invasive woody plants was conducted over the winter with a relatively large area cleared at Ridges conservation site (Badertscher Preserve). This expands upon restoration of what is the highest quality conservation area within the community. Many remnant native plant species have been found here within the habitats of fen wetland, oak woodland, and oak savanna. Pruning which began last fall on Janesville and Moorland Road street trees continued earlier this past in winter. The street trees are being groomed to ultimately allow 15 feet of clearance for vehicular passage beneath. Pruning also strives to create sound branch structure by selecting a main leader (trunk) and removing crowded and potentially hazardous branches. Weather was conducive through most of late winter and early spring to complete prescribed burns on several conservation sites. Prairie, oak savanna, oak woodlands, and some wetland areas are dependent on fire to maintain their health. Staff, contractors, and some amazing volunteers from The Prairie Enthusiasts safely conducted several burns. The new city work boat has already proven helpful in removing bogs and other obstructions from lake access sites. Always something interesting! I received a call from a resident who had a swarm of honeybees take residence in a planter on the front of his home. Removal of bees is certainly not a function of the City. However, I called Karl & Amy Hoeppner, hobbyist beekeepers, who collected the colony. Another resident in Muskego reported possibly having invasive Red Swamp crayfish in their subdivision retention pond. A friend who has pond monitoring equipment came out to investigate and found them to be White River crayfish, a closely related native species. 11 7 -ca oil Jul i" tit r r# ir.r JL i t + v 7*re, 0I JA06 ir 1. y + 'JF Jv lip dw MOW Mr•M, Aldr- Ar rl+ 4r ■ -~"ram r Ll I A - - F 11A t . - "' . r# P 11L " # f 41 Ir - 4 - - ' 1 r di +' k 6bi .1 a - r ' e 1, 0.
