UNFINISHED BUSINESS
1. Current status of lake (water levels, ice, fish and wildlife).
It was noted there is heavy plant growth that impedes navigation in much of the lake (especially the eastern side)
but traffic lanes allow navigation through much of the lake.
2. Future project ideas.
Managing brush, trees, and phragmites in islands was discussed. It was noted that the proposed 2022 budget
includes $5,000 for watershed management projects. This would help fund conservation management activities
on sites such as Marshland Camps Preserve (direct drainage), and Candlewood-Moorland conservation site (Bass
Bay tributary). Also, an additional $21K in 2022 budget is requested for weed control in 2022.
3. Discuss DNR cattail burn plans.
This project was postponed until 2022.
NEW BUSINESS
1. Discuss potential of Lake District financially assisting DNR Big Muskego Wildlife Area
habitat projects and other watershed improvement projects.
In August 2021 DNR will be controlling large growths of giant reed grass (phragmites) on the western cattail
fringe of Big Muskego Lake within Big Muskego Wildlife Area lands. Helicopters and drones will spray
herbicide targeting this plant. Follow up drone spraying may be needed in 2022 and it is requested that the
District consider funding these follow-up efforts utilizing a portion of the aforementioned budget requests to
cover potential costs. There is a rare fen (calcareous) wetland on the lake adjacent to Holz Drive and
Marshland Camps Preserve
