Deputy Commissioner's Update - Current Condition of Lake/Bay, Water Levels, Plant
Growth, Fish and Wildlife.
Greg Burmeister, Deputy Commissioner, noted that the ice went out last week on schedule. When
the ice goes out the wildlife including waterfowl provided quite a spectacle. The Recreation
Department hosted a kayak trip on the lake and saw roughly 25 different species of ducks, geese
and swans. Thousands of birds were there. In the spring there were six eaglets around last year
along with mature eagles in the area. The lake is up three inches and Tom Zagar, the City Forester
and Conservation Specialist was looking to lower the dam to restore the normal lake levels. Many
jamborees took place on the lake over the winter. There will likely be a lot of weed growth due to
the lack of snow. Shoreline damage occurred on east side of the lake caused by the ice.
