BMLDCM Minutes20200526 MINUTES CITY OF MUSKEGO BIG MUSKEGO LAKE DISTRICT DEPUTY COMMISSIONERS MINUTES Tuesday May 26, 2020, 5:00 PM; Muskego City Hall CALL TO ORDER at 5:00 PM. ROLL CALL: Len Pilak, Larry Schweitzer, Karl Hoeppner, and Greg Burmeister present (Tom Kies excused). Tom Zagar (City staff) present. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: All recited pledge of allegiance to USA. STATEMENT OF PUBLIC NOTICE: Meeting was legally noticed. nd APPROVAL OF MINUTES – May 26, 2019: Karl moved to approve, Larry 2; carried all. VOUCHER APPROVAL NEW BUSINESS 1. Current status of lake (water levels, ice, fish, and wildlife) Lake levels are finally near normal after three inches of rain over two weeks ago. Carp were observed splashing (spawning) along Groveway Lane shore near the creek mouths and carp were observed near the dam. Earlier high water and winds made floating bogs an issue again. A large bog lodged along Groveway Lane since last year had recently blown back out across the lake. Eagles and ospreys are back (at least one eaglet in nest). There are now two active osprey nests on the lake – one on the platform at the south end of the refuge and a new nest on the platform along the channel to Bass Bay. Forster’s terns returned and began to stake out a colony but high waters apparently made them move on - they do not appear to be nesting anywhere on the lake this year. A diversity and great numbers of ducks, some Trumpeter swans, and hundreds of pelicans were using the lake as a migration stopover following ice-out. One Black tern observed by Tom Z. On Big Muskego, Milfoil appears to be more prolific and it will likely require more chemical treatment than previous years. Greg noted clearer water in Bass Bay but aquatic plant growth was not dense (yet). Greg noted that the DNR had marked the refuge boundary with steel U-channel posts and aluminum signs last year. These signs were flattened by ice-out such that they were below, at, or projecting just above the water’s surface. This created a navigation hazard, as they were not conspicuous to boaters. Greg and Tom Z marked 10 of these signposts with empty white one-gallon plastic bottles and notified DNR staff. (DNR staff subsequently removed these signposts on June 1, 2020). 2. Future project ideas No Discussion. COMMUNICATIONS AND ANY OTHER BUSINESS AS AUTHORIZED BY LAW ADJOURNMENT: Larry moved to adjourn at 5:51 PM; meeting adjourned.
