BMLDDepMin061802 BIG MUSKEGO LAKE/BASS BAY PROTECTION & REHABILITATION DISTRICT DEPUTY COMMISSIONERS MEETING HELD TUESDAY, JUNE 18, 2002 The meeting was called to order at 7:02 PM. Those present were Deputy Commissioners Larry Schweitzer, Greg Burmeister, Steve Wojnowski and Scott Godleski. Also present were Lakes Projects Coordinator Tom Zagar and conservation intern, Marisa Pankowski. The meeting was posted in accordance with the open meeting law. The minutes from the meetings held July 17, 2001, September 25, 2002, and January 21, 2002 were reviewed. Larry Schweitzer made a motion to approve the minutes from all three of the prior meetings. Seconded by Scott Godleski and carried by all. There were no vouchers to approve. Under unfinished business, the status of rehabilitation management was discussed. Greg Burmeister said that he took care of all of the woody plants on Island #’s 2 and 3, but still needed to get rid of the plants on Island #1. The idea of volunteers from Delphi to complete the project on Island #1 was brought up and taken into consideration. There was discussion of many abandoned duck blinds on the lake. Scott thought that they had a engine hoist puller to pull the posts of the blinds. Greg Burmeister brought up that every time a blind was spotted it should be marked with a milk jug so it can be found at a later time and removed. The idea of the Delphi volunteers was mentioned for this project as well. Greg Burmeister suggested that signs could be posted at the boat launches to warn unfamiliar boat users on the shallow depth of the lake, the many obstructions, and mudflats. The committee discussed the wild rice project that the DNR was going to collaborate with the city on. The money is not available for the project. There was discussion of the lake district paying for it. The spreading of the rice would take place in fall when wild rice naturally drops its grains. It was brought up that Jim Jackley should be brought in to discuss this possible project. The committee members were concerned on the location of the detention pond for the new neighborhood on Durham. The city received a ten thousand dollar lake planning grant for writing the Big Muskego Lake/Bass Bay management plan. Tom Zagar had an outline of what was done to date on the Big Muskego Lake management plan. It is projected to be done by the spring of 2003. The Big Muskego Lake Annual meeting is coming up in August. The commissioners said there should be a power point presentation of what is going on with the lake. Also, the dam level should be discussed. They talked of having Randy Schumacher in to talk to them about what is going on with the dike. There was discussion about the creek that goes through the golf course. There was concern because the creek drains from around the landfill area. There is no testing for any contamination in the creek, although the creek runs into Big Muskego Lake and there is regular testing of the lake close to the point where the creek meets the lake. Greg Burmeister was concerned if there should be more testing. Tom Zagar said that the landfill monitors it very well. st Friday, June 21, Biochem will be out to treat for Eurasian Water Milfoil in Bass Bay and any problem areas in the lake. The chemical that will be used will be a variety of 2, 4-D, which is selective for Eurasian Water Milfoil. Larry moved to adjourn and Scott seconded. Carried by all. The meeting adjourned at 8:12 PM. Respectfully submitted, Marisa Pankowski Conservation Intern /mlp
