BMLCommM20020611BIG MUSKEGO LAKE/BASS BAY PROTECTION & REHABILITATION DISTRICT
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS (Approved)
MINUTES OF SPECIAL MEETING HELD TUESDAY, JUNE 11, 2002
The meeting was called to order at 7:27 PM by Mayor Slocomb. Also present were
Commissioners Petfalski, Le Doux, Patterson, Madden, Salentine, Sanders, and
Damaske, Lakes Project Coordinator Zagar, City Attorney Molter, and Clerk -Treasurer
Marenda. Those present recited the Pledge of Allegiance.
The Mayor reported the meeting was noticed in accordance with the Open Meeting
Law.
NEW BUSINESS
Authorize expenditure for Weed Harvester Repair
Mayor Slocomb advised it will cost $3,784.73 to replace the bottom and unload
conveyor on the harvester. Cattails have foiled the old mesh. This repair should carry
us through quite a period of time. Commissioner Salentine moved to approve the
expenditure of $3,784.73. Commissioner Damaske seconded; motion carried.
Authorize expenditure for treatment of nuisance algae/Bass Bay
Mayor noted the letter from Tom Zagar contained information about nuisance
filamentous algae on Bass Bay. Marine Biochemists indicates this can be controlled
using a product called "Cutrine Plus" at a cost of $150/acre. Mr. Zagar indicates the
DNR will allow the District to amend its aquatic plant control permit to allow the
application of this product on up to 10 acres. Commissioner Sanders moved to approve
amendment to the permit to allow chemical treatment of 10 acres up to $1,500.
Commissioner Salentine seconded; motion carried.
Mr. Steve Oschmann asked what if the treatment doesn't work to alleviate the smell and
terrible looks of the algae. Mr. Zagar noted it isn't as bad as two weeks ago. The
question is what if there's an explosion of algae down the line. Mr. Oschmann noted he
hauled out about two tons last year. Mr. Zagar stated the treatment is good for 3-4
weeks and it could come back with the right conditions. If that occurs, Mayor Slocomb
stated another special meeting of the Big Lake Commissioners could be held prior to a
Council meeting to consider authorizing another treatment.
ADJOURNMENT
Commissioner Sanders moved to adjourn at 7:42 p.m. Commissioner Salentine
seconded; motion carried.
Respectfully submitted,
n K. Marenda, CIVIC
