PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE - CITY OF MUSKEGO
MINUTES OF MEETING HELD JULY 21, 1976
The meeting was called to order at 7:18 P.M. by Acting Chairman
Pienkos. Also present were committee member Wallner, Mayor Gottfried,
Ald. Constantineau, Lt. Earl Zabel and several residents of Martin
Drive.
Mrs. Beatrice Kraemer presented a petition signed by 31 residents
of Martin Drive requesting a change in the speed limit from the
present 35 mph to 25 mph. Lt. Zabel pointed out that a traffic
survey was taken and over a four day period an average speed of
30 mph was recorded and as far as the Police Department was con-
cerned this was the recommended speed. The committee discussed the
possibility of a speed reduction from 35 mph to either 25 mph (citizen's
request) or 30 mph (police department's recommendation). Ald. Wallner
moved, seconded by Ald. Pienkos to recommend to Common Council that
speed limit on Martin Drive be changed from 35 mph to 25 mph from
Lannon Drive west to College Avenue. Motion carried. It is also
recommended that "Radar Enforced" signs be placed under some of
the speed signs. Lt. Zabel advised the committee that this type of
sign is available through the State.
Mrs. Kraemer also requested that two speed limit signs be replaced
since they have been dfown for some time at the following locations,
across from 6520 Martin Drive and also just south of this address.
She also requested that "Children Present" signs be erected in
various areas.
Lt. Zabel requested the Safety Committee to take under consideration
the opening up of Tower Drive or the widening of the existing entrance.
Since several organizations are involved, including the Legion and
the Electric Company, the committee will take this request under con-
sideration.
Ald. Schaumberg arrived at 7:45 P.M. and assumed chairmanship of
the meeting.
Ald'. Pienkos moved, seconded by Ald. Wallner, to recommend Council
approval of the placement of "Stop" signs on the northwest corner
of the intersection of Lowell and Emerson and the southeast corner
of the intersection of Lowell and Emerson. Motion carried.
The Safety Committee referred to the Rules, Laws & Ordinance Committee
a request from the police department that an ordinance be drafted
• regulating and controlling outlying rafts on lakes within the city
as recommended by the Police Department.
Lt. Zabel raised the possibility of the City of Muskego have a
tornado warning plan and siren, especially on the lakes. The
committee members were in agreement that this was an important
concern and will contact other communities on what they are doing.
The minutes of the previous meeting were reviewed and placed on
file.
