PSM19750721PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE - CITY OF MUSKEGO
WOTES TAKEN AT INFORMAL MEETING HELD ON MONDAY, JULY 21, 1975
Present were Aldermen Colburn and Foldy and Mayor Gottfried.
Ald. Colburn brought the meeting to order.
A group of approximately 30 residents of the Fountainwood Subdivision
wppeared to discuss the need for some action to alleviate dangerous
onditions existing on Highway 24 from the County line west to College Ave.
Also present regarding this matter was State Representative James A.
Rutkowski and Messrs. Jorgenson and Smith, representing the Waukesha Office
of the State Highway Commission.
Mayor Gottfried advised the residents in attendance that although the State
has jurisdiction over S.T.H. 24 the city will urge them to take immediate
remedial action. Mr. Jorgensen reviewed the past history of that section of
Highway 24 including previous actions to reduce the traffic hazards. He
also reviewed the accident history of that segment of
Highway 24. Mr. Jorgenson pointed out that there had been 13 accidents
during the first five months of 1975, that the average daily traffic
count was 139000 cars and in his opinion the road as presently constructed
is not capable of handling that number of vehicles.
r. Jorgenson also pointed out that money was not available for a major
reconstruction of the area and that the possibilities of improving S.T.H. 24
within the next several years was rather remote unless unexpected monies
were made available by the federal government.
Several residents urged that some interim measures be taken to improve
the situation such as, reduction of speed from 50 mph to 35 mph or the
creation of a turning lane by closing the inside traffic lane to thru
traffic and making it a "left turn only" lane. It was also pointed out
that the shoulders along the roadway in that vicinity are in need of
repair.
After a great deal of discussion Mr. Jorgenson promised the residents in
attendance that he will prepare a study of the area in the hope of finding
some immediate solution to the problem. He will attend the next Safety
Committee meeting and report the findings of his study.
The meeting ended at approximately 10:00 P.M.
Respectfully submitted,
