PSM19730412PUBLIC SAFETY COMMITTEE - CITY OF MUSKEGO MINUTES OF MEETING HELD APRIL 12, 1973 • The meeting was called to order by Chairman Cole at 7:10 P.M. Also present were Aldermen Ford, Knudsen and Foldy and Mayor Gottfried. The present speed limits on Durham Drive were discussed. The Police Dept. has recommended that a 35 mph speed limit be established from S.T.H. 24 to C.T.H. "00". Ald. Ford moved to recommend that the speed limit on Durham Drive from Highway 24 to Woods Road be 35 mph and that it be 45 mph from + Woods Road to "00" with advisory signs being placed at the curves. Motion seconded by Ald. Cole and carried. The Police Dept. has recommended that the speed limit on Tess Corners Dr. be 35 mph from College Ave. to the east city limits. Ald. Ford moved to recommend Council approval of the above change. Seconded by Ald. Knudsen, motion carried. The State of Wisconsin is considering the possibility of reducing the speed limit in the area of Highway 24 and Highway "Y" to 35 mph. The Police Dept. has pointed out the need to correct the direction of the overhead light. Mayor Gottfried to communicate with the Electric Company. Parkland Center's request for street lights along Highway 24 west to •Parkland Drive was considered. The committee will get estimates of the cost to meet this request. The committee reviewed the request for a street light on the corner of Westlyn Drive and Prospect Drive. It was the committee's opinion that the area did not warrant a street light. This had been the previous decision of the committee. The committee reviewed the request for a street light on the corner of Hardtke and Muskego Drives. It was the decision of the committee that the need was not sufficient enough to change the present policy of not placing street lights within subdivisions. A lengthy discussion was held relative to the need for a major improvement on Highway 24 from the east county line to Tess Corners. It was the decision of the committee to refer the matter to the new committee with the suggest that a joint meeting of officials of New Berlin, Muskego and the State Highway Commission be held to discuss the problem. Chief Kraus presented his recommendation that the city consider the re- organization of the rank structure for the Police Dept. and hiring of three community service officers. The program would be eligible for a grant under the L.E.A.A. (Law Enforcement Assistance Aid). It was the committee's • decision to refer the matter to the new committee. Resolution #48-73, Establishing the City's Intent to Change the Personnel Structure of the Muskego Police Department, was discussed. The proposed resolution was deferred to the new committee. The March Report of the Police Dept. was received and placed on file. Ald. Ford moved to adjourn, seconded by Ald. Cole. Motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 9:00 P.M.
