The regular meeting of the Public Safety Committee was called to order
by Chairman Roland Linck at 7:00 P.M. Also present were Alderman
Lentini, Alderman Narlock, Mayor Gottfried and Duane Whitehouse.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved and will
be placed on file.
Alderman Lentini mentioned a complaint of a growing number of motor-
cycles at the Wing & Fin Tavern on Racine Avenue.
The possibility of creating and filling the position of an assistant
humane officer on a part time basis for patrolling the City was dis-
cussed by the Committee and Duane Whitehouse. The discussion covered
the work that was involved, hours of employment, the work performed by
John Kelly, the humane officer and compensation.
It was moved by Alderman Linck that the Committee recommend that a
new position of an assistant humane officer be created. The work to
be performed would be the patrolling of the more settled areas of the
City at various times of the day and week for a maximum of 12 hours for
any one week. Compensation for the work would be $2.50 an hour and
10 cents a mile. Monthly reports as prescribed by the Committee would
be filed at the end of each month. Motion seconded by Alderman
Lentini. Motion carried.
Alderman Linck moved to recommend that a form of identification with
a photograph should be designed for the Mayor and Aldermen. Seconded
by Alderman Lentini, motion carried.
A petition with 172 signatures of Muskego residents living along the
shores of Little Muskego Lake was presented by Irvin Brown, one of
the men patrolling the lake. Mr. Brown discussed at some length the
situation on the lake during weekends and holidays. Also presented
were recommendations for new boating regulations by Mr. Carlo, a
water patrolman at Lake DeNoon. These papers were referred to the
Rules, Laws & Ordinance Committee. Mayor Gottfried mentioned the
transportation problem of the Chief of Police in having to commute
from his home in Brown Deer until he has moved to Muskego. Although
no compensation for this travelling was provided at the time he accepted
his new position, it was the consensus of the Committee members that
a consideration of $25.00 a week should be provided. This proposal
was referred to the Finance Committee.
•Since the Chief of Police will begin his duties shortly, it is imperative
that a squad car should be provided as soon as possible. Alderman
Linck moved that the Committee recommend to the Council that the
Finance Committee be authorized to advertise for bids covering the
purchase of a squad car in accordance with specifications approved by
the Committee after presentation by the Chief. Seconded by Alderman
Narlock, motion carried.
