S e 2 Au2{:, 1965 -- 7:05 P.M.
PRESENT were Chairman Hudziak, Aldermen Wieselmann and
Bostater, Mayor Gottfried, five members of the Muskego
Volunteer Fire Department, Louis Ludwig, Chief - John Churillo,
Assistant Chief - Richard Martin, 1st Asstt Chief - Raymond
Baseler, Pres. - Carl J. Mack, Lt. and six members of the
Tess Corners Volunteer Fire Department, Henry Kurth, Chief -
• Howard E. Imm6i Asset Chief - F. R. Lamb, Capt. - E. J. Sal-
entine, Lt. - W. C. Bierbach, Member of Bd. and Roman Rynders,
Ass1t Member of Bd.
The meeting was called to order by Chairman Hudziak.
The main purpose of the meeting was to hold a joint conference
with both volunteer fire departments to permit officers of
the departments to get first hand information on the proposed
Fire and Police Commission Ordinance.
Mayor Gottfried explained Ordinance No. 20 to the men from
the Muskego and Tess Corners Volunteer Fire Departments. A
question and answer period followed. Numerous comments by
both departments and persons present were heard. A sampling
• of these are presented and they bear out the reactions and
thoughts of both departments.
Chief Louis Ludwig asked why this had to come before the
Council at this time? Mayor Gottfried replied that some
Councilmen felt it should be enacted at this time because
they felt there should be additional police protection.
Howard Imme expressed the thought that when it was decided
to bring this before the Council that there couldn't have
been very much thought given to cost of operating a fire
department, that the matter was very much premature. He
stated that there are very likely very few people who could
say they were familiar with the work or any other matter
pertaining to this operation. There should have been a
great deal more research before bringing forth an ordinance.
The question came up as to what would be done: Would the
City buy the departments? Mayor Gottfried expressed the view
that the City could not afford to buy the departmentts
equipment.
Chief Ludwig said that as far as he was concerned he felt
he could talk for most of his men and they would not take
orders from some other chief when the equipment was owned
by an independent corporation. Chief Imme expressed
• similar views.
Ambulance service vs. rescue work was discussed.
Chief Louis Ludwig suggested that when a police chief is
appointed and in future years the rescue work should be
handled by the Police Department. Mayor Gottfried mentioned
that Mr. Hudson had again expressed interest in performing
such work.
. Motion to adjourn by Ald. Wieselmann, seconded by Ald.
Bostater and carried.
Meeting adjourned at 8:37 P.M.
