Needs Assessment of Study Room Expansion
1. 2019 Library Strategic Planning Process: In 2019 the Library surveyed the community on a variety of
topics. Patrons were asked in the survey their thoughts on expanding the study rooms. The average
response was placing it as a medium priority. Note: Since this survey was taken societal remote work and
online course use has increased. The highest Library goal the patrons ranked on the survey was our efforts
to "help provide a safe place to meet as a community'. There were 15 write-in comments (the most of
any topic) requesting more study rooms.
2.2022 Staff Survey on Study Room Needs: The staff were surveyed in -person and electronically to gauge
their observations about study room needs.
Print responses: All print responses replied it would be helpful to have more study rooms.
Electronic responses:
Study Roams 1: Based an your observations of patrons, would it be helpful to have more study
roams?
5responses
Yes
Yes_ on several occasions, I have seen patrons wanting a study room but having to go elsewhere in the library
to study.
Yes - like all of our services demand ebbs and flows throughout the day/year, but there are definitely times
when there is more demand for rooms than there are rooms available.
It would absolutely be helpful to have more study rooms. Particularly during the school year, the 4 available
study rooms are often simultaneously in use, which forces patrons seeking private meeting spaces to either
choose an unenclosed space or leave entirely. Even 2 or 3 more study rooms would be of benefit.
Study Rooms 2: In what ways are the study rooms helpful or important to patrons? You can be
general or specific in your responses to help illustrate how they are used.
5responses
School study groups use them, tutors use them, patrons use them when they need to block out outside noise.
Since Covid, we have several patrons needing the study rooms for interviews or small meetings and they're
most usually occupied.
They are used for private meetings, study and group projects.
offer quiet spaces to work, for making phone calls or having group meetings where they would be disrupting
other patrons elsewhere in the Library, and for privacy_ It's very helpful to patrons to have a dependable
location like this, especially during exams and interviews.
Not Only do students use the space to study, we have seen an increase in patrons using the study rooms for
virtual meetings_ Patrons have required the spaces for Zoom meetings such asjob interviews and
appointments with doctors or mental health counselors_ These meetings in particular would not be easily
held outside of a private, enclosed space.

3. 2022 Study Room General Usage Count: The usage count ran June 3rd-June 13t". Note: this usage
count was run at the start of summer vacation. Counts vary throughout the year, seeing an increase

4. 2022 Study Room Reservation Count: Patrons can reserve a study room twice a month to ensure they
have the space for time critical events such as a proctored exam, an online job interview, etc. Study
rooms used to be first come first serve but over the years the study rooms were full so frequently that
patrons were not able to ensure they had a private space to meet for these important life events. Their
concerns for this issue and feedback led to the reservation procedure.

Why are the study rooms helpful/important to you? (Detailed response)
I tutor, and when you have HS exam prep there is no room!
I always get my work done here!
Exam prep and studying
Exam prep, moving [to] a different environment than my room, a nice place to study without distraction
Because they are good study rooms
At times the Library is very loud. Things echo thru the main area. It's hard to concentrate.
Quiet for studying but also good for meetings.
Helps to collaborate with friends during studying or just doing homework.
Good for focusing for projects.
Taking online exams!
Quiet, private.
Best place for me to focus especially during exams and great to work with people.
Quiet place without distractions of home to do work (working remotely)
It would be nice to have a way to sound proof the rooms and possible shades to decrease distractions.
Quiet room to talk through things while I work.
You should get speakers in the rooms so people can plug in their phones and listen to stuff while working
Regarding above comment, walls may be too thin for this, I've heard conversations in next door rooms.
Add more places for just USB ports too
Provides me with my own space/area to focus and get more work done!
