Guest Comments: Library staff expressed their concerns about Sunday hours. The only day that they can plan family time because they know that they don't have to work at the library. How will the extra hours be staffed? They feel stretched with the current hours. They also stated the survey of Muskego residents does not include the library service area. c. Comment Forms: The information was circulated. 9. Old Business a. FOL: None b. Trust Fund: None. c. Librarian's Report: Bob Birmingham will do a program on May 2 at 7 pm on Fort Blue Mounds and the Black Foof War. d. WCFLS: None. 10. New Business a. Pending Fine Disputes: None. b. AutomationfTechnology: None. c. Annual Report: None. d. Customer Survey: In light of the librarians' comments we reviewed the history of Sunday hours. If we implement Sunday hours we need to budget for them on an ongoing basis. Do we need more staff? How dD we adjust staff for Sunday hours? The cost of Sunday hours has to be explained to thH public. In the 2001 survey 8 out of 200 mentioned Sunday hours. There was a lot of discussion on the survey and how to do it. We should do a survey on Sunday hours and include other questions that will help us do long range planning. The consensus is to address staffing before adding Sunday hours. Focus on what we are doing well and keep doing it until staffirg changes. R Melcher, S. Snyder and H. Sanhuber will work on the survey for the next meeting. e. Director Evaluation Process: None. 11. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT March/April 2007 In celebration of April's National Library Week, State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmeister noted Wiscclnsin's leading role in resource sharing. Over 18.8 million searches were made on BadgerLink, and 6.3 million itE!mS were borrowed through interlibrary loan. Over sixty people attended tlhe program on birds of prE~y, and the presenter gave the library a collection of ne!w materials on the topic, as wull as two large framed photos of raptors. This was another plrOgram in our April Earth [)ay celebration, which was also highlighted in the lobby caSE~. The "Great lakes Gardener" program drew an audience of nearly one hundred. Melinda Meyers's sensible tips and warm graciousness were well received. The Muskego Historical Sociiety and the Friends of the Library are cooperating to bring Robert Birmingham in for a return visit. This time he will be speaking about Fort Blue Mounds and the Black I-Iawk War. The program is Wednesday, May 2, at 7:00 P.M. A display publicizes Sam WE,iss's Eagle Scout amphitheater project, and asks for donations. April is also "Dance Month," and Casey and Kristen, daughters of our staff members laurie and Marie, did a lobb~, display highlighting their art. lapsitters, Baby & Me, émd Preschool Pals have finishl~d their sessions, and Penny is preparing for the summl~r reiading program, "Get a Clue!" Reading groups are continuing to meet. Besides "Murder by the Book," "B.A.R.S," and the Civil War book group, MPl serves as facilitator for the Muskego Woman's Club, and Tudor Oaks, both of which have reading groups. We received a copy of her nE~W book, My Daddy Built a Tree House, from author Angeline Schmitz lee. Reference desk staff heiud a presentation from Raymo,nd Perez of the "Adult Student Initiative," a state program to help adults whose education was interrupted, to complete a college degree. Working with WCFlS and local pres:s, he hopes to publicize his scheduled visits to libraries in the county, and to meet with potential students. Quote of the month: "PI~oph~ become librarians because they know too much. Their knowledge extends beyond mere categories. They cannot be confined to disciplines. Librarians are all-knowing and all-seeing. They bring order to chaos. They bring wisdom and culture to the masses. They preserve every aspect of human knowledge. Librarians rule. And they will kick the-snot-out of anyone who says otherwise!" So says the Website at w~",.liblrarianavengers.org. . . . l INTERLIBRARY COOPERATION: APL met at Muskego last week, and county funding was the main topic of discussion-both the capital CO!)ts initiative, and funding we may receive under Act 420. Tom described the status of cClntacts between Waukesha County and surroundinu counties in regard to Act 420 funding. Preliminary responses have ranged from a request for copies of our annual rE~ports, to inquiries about how we verify circulations by true nem-residents, to a possible requirement that each of our libraries send bills to eêìlch olf theirs. Thanks to Tom and the WCFLS staff, non-resident patrons are correctly assigned to their municipalities, and we have procedures in place. The Act 150 Committee required Tom to submit a library-siting plan to the WCFLS Board this year. The basis for such a plan was discussed. Considerations may include locations based on present ,and projected population (:enters, travel and traffic patterns, density of registered borrowers, or proposed development potential. We felt that it may be wise to survey the literature to see if other places have wrestled with the problem of imposing a plan onto a land~;cape that already has established libraries, and where the entity requesting the plcm is not the entity providing the funding for land acquisition or building. Based on the Himmel & Wilson study, we do not see recommending the closure or relocation of presient libraries. Is there any formal planning more recent than the 1972 SEWRPC stud~(? A.fter much discussion, APL asked the WCFLS Board to approve delaying the library site study requested by the Act 150 Committee for a year. LIBRARY TECHNOLOGY UPDATE: People trying to USie WCFLS databases from home have met with spotty succeSìS. WPL and WCFLS staff members have been working out the bugs with a softwar'9 pac::kage called ExProxy. 1'lIllet you know when the tweaking is complete. The city is considering Irede~;igning our Websites, and going with a "content management" package. Janie is our primary contact for this project, with Paula being trained on the new software.-if purchased-next year" The library's home page can still be set as the default screen for the thirty computers, and it will still be easy to get to our catalog. More information will be available as this pro, iect progresses.
