1. Call to Order: President T. Uttke called the meeting to order at 7:00 P.M.
2. Roll Call: Also present were J. De Vito-Scalzo, D. Dominski, C. Gore, R. Jankowski, R. Melcher, S.
Oneson, S. Snyder, and Director H. Sanhuber. R. Rammer was absent.
3. Pledge of Allegiance: recited.
4. Statement of Public Notice: Givl~n in accordance with the open meeting law on April 19, 2006.
5. Approval of Minutes: D. Dominski moved to approve minutes of the March 22, 2006 meeting and J.
De Vito-Scalzo seconded.
6. Next Meeting Scheduled May 24, 2006.
7. Treasurer's Report: S. Snyder moved R. Jankowski seconded motion to approve payment of April
expenses of $54,068.56. Motion carried. S. Snyder moved R. Jankowski seconded motion to approve
payment of WCFLS April eXpenSE!S of $4,720.05. Motion carried.
8. Communications
a. Communications: Received a thank you letter from Muskego Elementary for the Brain
Detective program.
b. Guest Comments: None.
c. Comment Forms: Patron comment forms were circulated.
d. Library Board Changes: Bob Melcher has been appointed as the Common Council
Represen1tative replacing Neal Borgman. Holly will write a IE!tter thanking Neal for his service
on the board. J. De Vito-Scalzo, S. Oneson and S. Snyder have been reappointed to the
board. T. Uttke will be resigning from the board after the May meeting.
9. Old Business
a. FOL: Minutes of the March 30 and April 19 wine tasting committee meetings were distributed.
About 160 tickets have bE~en sold for the event.
b. Trust Fund: $42,690.09 al: last report.
c. Librarian's Report: Read and placed on file. The Civil war büok discussion group starts today.
Book Pagø was circulated. The Common Council approved the Assistant Library Director
position and eliminated the Librarian III position. A compilation of the programming survey
results was distributed. It will be on the next agenda for discussion. The long-range plan is
scheduled for review.
d. WCFLS: There was an article on the Act 150 report in today's Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Because of the Act 150 plan to freeze standards all of the WCFLS library boards will have to
reapprove the standards. Waukesha and Dane counties rejected the second part of the
consultants' "Governance Options" report. This part of the report was on financials. WCFLS
annual report summary, Act 150 summary of committee issues, WCFLS trustee connection
and state newsletter were distributed.
10. New Business
a. Pending Fine Disputes: Nlone.
b. AutomationfTechnology: 1-\ sample report from the new Internet filter was circulated. The filter
affected the firewall and WIFI. Both companies are working to resolve the issues. Overdrive
has added 325 more titles and changed the loan period from 14 to 7 days.
c. Annual Reports: No questions.

LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
March/April 2006
. Most regular programming is winding down whill~ we prepare for the
summer program. Computer classes have finished, and we've completed the
three sessions on Medicare, Part D.
We are excited about a new endeavor, a Civil Walr book discussion group.
Jane has arranged for historian and educator Edward Pierce to launch the group
with a presentation on the war, tonight, at 7 P.M. The first book to be discussed
is Apri/1865. May has been dleclared "Historical Presentation and Archaeology
Month." We are hoping to palrtner with the Muskego Historical Society to host
author Robert Birmingham, former state archaeologist and author of a new book
on Aztalan, for a presentation.
The Shakespeare displ,ay got a lot of comment, and the wine and cheese
display is getting raves. If you get a chance, check out the "Dummies" display.
The publisher of the books "f,or Dummies" sent many materials for us to use in
creating this humorous display.
Staff members went to a workshop on resources for job seekers, held at
WCTC. They were impressed with the services provide!d by the Workforce
Development Center, and with the new materials and Internet sites they
encountered.
. County children's services staff made the annuall pilgrimage to the
Cooperative Children's Book Center in Madison. This is a research collection,
and contains copies of thous,ands of new books for examination and study.
The Public Works crew planted the VFW's flag diisposal box. The candy
apple red color is striking. The Commander, Dennis Duran, made all of the
arrangements, and contacted the Sun for publicity.
We sent in a press release asking people to plant an extra garden row for
the hungry, and to bring their excess produce to the library for distribution to the
New Berlin/Muskego Food Palntry. Thanks to Jane and George, who oversee this
project.
We are handing out flie!rs promoting the Muskego High School Performing
Arts Center's spring season.
Jane completed "Creating Public Library Programming," a course offered
online, by UW-Madison's School of Library and Information Studies.
The Muskego Woman'!) Club donated $100 to the:! library trust fund.
. We heard from former LB member Margaret Pur!)er, who sent along an
article about a wc)man who went to jail for library fines.. And some people think
our staff is mean! Brian O'Shea is doing two articles on the library for the Sun:
one on fines, and another on problem behavior.
The work of senior arti~)ts is on display in the lobby.
. We need to review the Iiong-range plan. I'll put it on the agenda as soon as
possible.
Tuesday night the job description and proposed pay range came before the
Common Council!. The city pl:esented this as a new, non-union position called
"Assistant Director," and votod to remove the old Libn 11\ position, through an
upcoming resolution. It is possible the job could be filled from within, which
could leave other jobs to be filled.
The Act 150 Committee! voted to freeze the county library standards for as
long as Governor Doyle's tax levy caps remain in force. Therefore, the part-time
Librarian I we were supposed to hire in December willlProbably not be hired.
There is a chanco the county board-supposedly votin!9 in June--could fail to
pass the plan, or that sufficient library boards could fail to ratify the revised
standards, but the Aldermen asked for details last night, and that's how it looks
now. However, it was remarked that if we added open hours, we would need to
add staff. The library board will be asked to re-vote on the standards because of
the proposed freeze.
William Tucker will be here Saturday, June 3rd from 2-4 P.M. to discuss his
book Miracles Made PossibIE~.
. Quote of the month: For National Library Week, State Superintendent
Elizabeth Burmaster issued ém editorial about the impc)rtance of Wisconsin
libraries, noting that 32 millioln visits were made to loc.:ll public libraries, and over
56 million library items were borrowed. "Libraries support our culture and quality
of life," says she.

. TECHNOLOGY REPORT
March-April 2006
Last month we had a question from a board member about receiving a
checkout receipt that had barcode numbers instead of titles, and the library
card number instead of the name. Linda had the answer: During that time,
we were checlking out using the computer backup system, so the usual
features were not available. Evidently city hall had ,él power outage, which
affected a switch in the library data room. We went most of a Saturday in
backup mode.
The new Internet filter has; been installed. We have seen a sample output
report, and w(~ will now bE! able to count OPAC uses.. There is a problem
with the firewall, and the IS Department staff have been working with
Secure Computing and Ethostream to resolve the rE!sulting problems that
has caused olUr wireless s.ervice. As soon as they alre resolved, I will be
doing the press release we discussed last month.
325 more titles have been added to Overdrive, making some 900 unique
titles in the collection and over 1,300 volumes. The loan period is now
seven days, and the time to pick up a hold has incmased from two to three
days.
. To promote the new virtual reference service, Governor Doyle proclaimed
Monday, April 24th to be A.skAway Day. Access to both virtual reference
and the Overdrive downlo,adable audiobooks are available off of the
library's Website.
The state has implemented a major upgrade to Bad!gerNet, the underlying
network that over 95% of 'Wisconsin's public Iibrarh;~s and branches (432
buildings) use to connect to their shared integrated library systems, and
for Internet access. SBC has made their initial site visit, and all looks good
for the installation. They say to plan for two hours lof down time, but that
so far, two minutes has bl~en more common. If possible, installations are
done before open hours. Due to our number of computers, we will still be
using a full T..1 line, but many libraries have been cut to a half-line.
Another big change may happen at summer's end, when a state library
technical services committee finishes looking at th4~ requests for proposal
on the future of WISCAT. Some library systems are! already using OCLC
instead of WI SCAT. Som4~ have scoped the WorldCat holdings into what
they're callinH BadgerCat. Any decision has financial and procedural
ramifications--particularly at the system level, so we'll be waiting to hear.
