Russ Jankowski Secretary LIBRARIAN'S REPORT February-March-April-May 200S 8ith the cancellation of two meetings, we have lots to report: CAFÉ meetings for the cataloging and circulation committees, and of the CAFÉ Council have been held. The new CAFÉ library cards are here, and are being phased in. Some libraries are using them now, because their stocks of cards-on-hand are low. There have been some problems with the lamination, so Musklego is planning to begin using them in late summer or early fall when the seven members of Constellation join GAFÉ. The Friends have sponsored two more programs. One was an appearance by Wisconsin Poet laureate, Denise Sweet. The other was a series of family history-writing workshops with Wisconsin autlhor and historian, Jerry Apps. The group of writers numbered about twenty, and attendance was consistent throughout the series. Mr. Apps attended the first and last sessions, and was available fl:>r questions via speakerphone during the middle programs. The wine and cheese event was a great success, with nearly ~ISO paid admissions, and a profit exceeding $S,OOO. The Friends are sponsoring an "Heirlooms-to-Go Show" on Saturday, June 2Sth from 1.-4. Items will be appraised for a nominal fee, with profits going to the Friends. Tours this spring included preschools, kindergartens, and 3rd-4th graders. Penny also visited Country Meadows. Our staff received instruction on "Map Muskego," the planning department's new on-line interactive mapping Website. Check it out at www.MapMuskeao.com. Several staff members went to Gates Foundation-funded workshops to learn about the new features of BadgerLink, the collection of statewide, shared electronic research tools. You can access BadgerLink off of the tlliJJ.brary's Website, www.ci.muskeao.wi.usllibrarv. ~nline news sources were the topic of another workshop for Irefdesk staff. They came back with handouts and many useful sites to share. Our staff tries to meet once a month to discuss books, and the "readers' advisory" qUE!stions we receive. These are the "Who writes like?" questions that librarians can easily answer-if they happen to read that author-and answer with more difficulty, if they do not. An electronic helper is "Novelist." Access iit off of the library's Website. Displays have ranged from wine tasting to the Waukesha County Women's Center, andl from 211 information to the presidency of FDR. National Arthritis Month and National Poetry Month have been highlighted. A display of wedding books accompanied the sale of Muskego Players' tic:kets. A "beekeeper" display is up now, courtesy of patron Jerrel Thomas. A "Star Wars" display was quickly decimated, so we are also showcasing astronomy books. Another display promotes a walk to aid breast cancer research. Despite the rel::ent news coverage, we have continued the Muskego Historical Society display. We have sold their maps and booklets ever since the new building opened, and since then, our own copies of thest~ materials have not been stolen. Study carrels at aisle ends are being used to spotlight items from the collection, and Tina has to re-fill them daily. Everyone is happy to see the end of income tax forms for the year. Vito Valenti's sculptures will be leaving soon to make room for the adult summer reading program display. The creators say to watch for an "outdoor French Café." Mary has continued to produce "new books" lists. Thanks to Linda, another step has been taken in the automation of technical services. When we add an item that is not already listed in iBi=;tro, the CAFÉ computer catalog, we are now searching OClC, a worldwide database of bibliographic records. When we find the correct record, we are able to import it into the shared catalog, and add our call number. The next CAFÉ library that adds the item merely has to attach their call number to the record. In April, Linda and her cClhorts added nearly 2,000 .tles, greatly diminishing our backlog. Computers the park & recreation department had planned to use to teach buying and s;elling on E-Bay were not available, and because the programs had already been promoted, we agreed to hold the classes here. Staff reluctance was more due to what could be perceived as our promotion of a for-profit enterprise than for any "noise-related" reason. For example, when we offer introduc1tory computer classes, wle teach "search engines," not just "Google." Held on Monday and Tuesday nights at the height of term paper season, allowing this class to meet was hard on the refdesk staff, as all computers were needed to serve library users. Aarlene attended a "stress management for women" workshop, and brought back materials for the library and ~s for staff. Muckey 4-H members sold popcorn at the Friends' art fair, and gave the profits to the library for the purchase of children's books. Books were also donated by the Country Me'adows kindergarten teachers in honor of Penny's work with their students. We have recéived a number of other cash donations. When the patron does not specify a use for the funds, I place them in the trust fund, to save for future projects. We received the first half of our WCFLS payment in the amount of $26,005.74. Most of this money will go toward meeting the 2005 county standard for materials' expenditures. I have been informed that the city will be receiving thirteen oillPaintings from former Muskego resident Karry Wohlust, and they will be finding a home at the library. The May 18th Finance Committele minutes say the city will be paying to have them framed in "mission style," and the price will include "a security system so the paintings can't be removed from the wall." The following memo dated May 1st was mailed to library board members because of the cancellation of two meetings: "There are a number of informational topics and issues I wantEtd to catch you up on, but nothing that requires formal board action. Please read as much or as little as interests you. I'll be happy to answer any questions I can, and will also be copying this information into the next librarian's report so we do not violate any provisions of the open meeting law. 8rarv listenina sessions: Rep. Vrakas, Sen. Lazich, and several state legislative aids élttended a listening session held April 30ii1ãtSussex-Lisbon. They were attentive--but noncommittal-to audience members' calls for increases in state aid funding for libraries. Right now state law reads that state aid is supposed to be 13 cents for every local dollar spent, but library systems have been getting more like 8 cents on the dollar. If you wanted to call Rep. Lé!lzich's office (1-800-334- 1442) and request her to vote for increased state aid to library ~systems, that would be good, as she's on the Joint Finance Committee. Because state aid has not increased, some programs, such as the children's summer re!ading program, have been scaled back. Other programs, such as Waukesha County Reads, have been cut altogether. Every year local libraries' cost for providing shared electronic databases goes up, and the amount the library system can afford to spend goes down. I am enclosing more background informatic)n from WCFLS. Dan Finlev at APL: An excerpt from the APL minutes is enclos,ed detailing the county exec's discussion with the directors' group about library consolidation. Trustee Connection: WCFLS has begun to issue a short newslletter for LB members. Wine & Cheese tastina: As oftoday, we had sold over 250 tickets to the May 7th event. I enclose several meeting minutes. The staff has done a great job of planning. Librarv Worth. and a rant: Two thoughtful pieces on the value of libraries are enclosed, as well as a letter to "Dear Abby." Your library staff did not write it-but we could have! Aos~IDY: When the APLs, LSTAs, and DL TCLs get you down, reach for this handy glossary. I will be putting it in ~et given to each new LB member." Quote of the month: "A great book should leave you with many experiences and slightlly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading it.
