Russ Jankowski Secretary . . . LIBRARIAN'S REPORT January/February 2005 A number of items came up for discussion this past month that are included in the packet of patron comments I routed. Someone posted a flier for a revival meeting at a church, which we took down. I allowed the posting of a notice for an open house at a private school, as we routinely post materials from local schools and universities. A second letter was sent for a teen's persistent violations of computer rules. Tudor Oaks will be holding a neighborhood meeting here to discuss their building and water plans with interested residents. After consultation with the planning department, I allowed the rooms to be booked, even though Tudor Oaks' residents pay to live there. We received a donation in support of our annual "Christmas Musicale." The Wisconsin Kiters sent $200 to the trust fund in appreciation of meeting room use. Two books on quilting were donated as a memorial, as was a copy of Bill Martin's CHICKA CHICKA BOOM BOOM. Displays have been varied, and range from St. Leonard's School's artwork to Chinese New Year. BSA Pack 18 Cub Scouts are celebrating their 75th birthday. February is also Scouting Month. The Muskego Historical Society has an ongoing display. Dr. Seuss's 1015t birthday is being honored with countywide activities, including an appearance here by the Mayor, who will perform Green Eggs and Ham with a newly literate adult, and enthusiastic library user, from Muskego. Bert Ponzi is displaying his art in the lobby cases. A great supporter of the Library, he's donated two pictures to the FOL Raffle. Tickets are tor sale. In addition to the Dr. Seuss celebration, the Literacy Council of Greater Waukesha is having a fund-raiser Scrabble tournament Sunday, February 2ih from 1-4 at the Steinhatel's Super Store. A session will be held for people with low vision March 2nd at 2 P.M. Representatives from the Division for Supportive Living, Bureau for the Blind, and from the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped will have displays, and be present to answer questions. The Muskego High School Spanish National Honor Society is hosting the first Spanish Cultural Day at the library on Saturday, March 19th from 12:30-1:30. Children will learn Spanish songs, make craft~ listen to a story in Spanish, and sample ethnic food. Muskego hosted an all-day seminar for three library systems on the upcoming summer reading program. Attendance was over sixty. Penny went to a conference in Madison on literature for young adults, and several reference staff will be attending a children's reader's advisory workshop. Book groups and story times are on going, with "Baby & Me" due to start March 8th. Several preschool groups and kindergartens have visited, or been visited. The Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America have announced the creation of the "Andre Norton" award, to recognize outstanding science fiction and fantasy novels for young adults. This will be an annual award, beginning next year. Tina created a useful "income tax" flier. AUTOMATION NEWS: Thanks to Jane's sleuthing, we now have a "counter" on the library Website, so we can . . . . monitor the number of visitors. It's been up for about three weeks, and this afternoon's number was over 9,600. Both the CAFÉ Council and the Circulation Committee have met. The universal card is very attractive. Sussex-Lisbon went "live" on February 14th and is using the new card. Lisa Bruere, the new CAFÉ Database Coordinator, started Monday, and will begin by visiting member libraries. We are now receiving a daily e-mail of MOTOR, notice of books, magazines, video, films, and software that are "Mentioned on Ielevision or Badio." Several staff members viewed the WisLine (i.e. using the Internet for the visual, and the telephone's speaker-phone option for the audio) presentation on Open WorldCat. While this is just getting implemented, eventually it will be commonplace for users searching Yahoo! or Google to be linked directly to their local library's online catalog. The Open World Cat program makes records of library-owned materials on OClC's WorldCat database available for users on these popular search sites, as well as other bibliographic and bookselling sites. Eventually Muskego will have holdings in WorldCat. Quote of the month: "I have always enjoyed reading books. It is an opportunity to listen to people living today or thousands of years ago. The ability to read and enjoy it separates us from the savages." (late American business executive, J.
