LIBRARIAN'S REPORT October/November 2004 Small but enthusiastic groups greeted three Wisconsin authors, who appeared this fall, courtesy of the Friends of the Library. Gary Niebuhr's "History of Mystery" was well received. Jerry Apps tutored participants in the writing of family history, and will take part in future sessions via speakerphone. Jane was congratulated for her excellent preparation of all events, but additional written and verbal comments were received. after the Apps presentation. Linda Godfrey's talk on "The Beast of Bray Road," and other weird Wisconsin phenomena was intriguing. "Food for Fines" is our next "extra" endeavor, and publicity is out. Food reminds me of the extremely appetizing "soup" display in the library. Yum! Maintenance Wizard George Wolwark's "troll" collection has finished its lobby run, and has been followed by a fancy exhibit concerning the "Red Hat Society," after the book by Sue Ellen Cooper. Bodacious Betty is making a return appearance as our own "red hat" lady. New young adult books now have a more prominent display. George, the aforementioned wiz, has constructed a "traffic control" gate for the circ desk area. Check out the gate and signs the next time you pass. The Wisconsin Library Association has named Marion Dane Bauer, Jack Ritchie, Charles D. Stewart and Peter Straub Notable Wisconsin Authors. The first letter under the new sanctions policy was sent to the parents of a teen who had been frequently warned to keep out of chat rooms. Reports of problems caused by an adult patron have been forwarded to the police department. The AARP tax aide program will move to city hall next year. We received $50 from the Women of the Moose, in appreciation for meeting room use. Joe Socher donated a Lincoln Penny plaque. We hung it in the children's area, low enough for them to see and touch the figure in relief. Children's programming and the four book discussion groups are on their regular fall and winter schedules. We are taking part in Waukesha County's "Kids Choice Awards," where children read from a selected list, and vote for their favorites. We are also displaying books for St. Paul's school's "Book Bonanza," for 4th and 5th graders, where children read from a list of selected titles. In past years, teams have competed to answer questions about the books. While we do not have a release date yet, "Harry Potter 6" is said to be entitled Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. A summer release has been hypothesized, which would tie in nicely with next summer library program's "fantasy" theme. Penny attended the first planning session. . . . Our article in the city's next newsletter deals with services for library users with disabilities. Penny will be giving reference staff a refresher on the types of adaptive equipment we have available. We received the second of our two WCFLS payments of $25,263. This is money for serving people who do not live in Muskego. This year, it will all go toward library materials' expenditures. Charlene attended an "elder issues" conference. APL met, and there were several CAFÉ meetings, in addition to the meeting of an ad hoc interloan committee. It was established to respond to the announcement by South Central Library System that they were immediately switching their ILL provider from WISCA T to OCLC. WISCA T is practically free, and OCLC has to be paid for, so there are budgetary implications on many levels-and no time to plan for them. USC's Annenberg School Center for the Digital Future issued a 105-page report on major trends that emerged during the Internet's first decade of public use: . About three-quarters of Americans now go online . They spend about 12.5 hours per week online . More than 40% of users believe that only about half of the information on the Internet is accurate and reliable . Most users trust information on Web sites they visit regularly, and on pages created by established media and the government . Information pages posted by individuals have the lowest credibility; only 9.5% of users say information on these sites is reliable and accurate . Television viewing continues to decline among Internet users Quote of the month: "I'm a voracious reader. You have to read to survive. People who read for pleasure are wasting their time. Reading isn't fun; it's indispensable."
