‘0 LIBRARIAN’S REPORT
SepternberlOctober 2002
Waukesha County Reads is in full swing. As of this morning, 49 copies of The
Giverwere checked out. The New IBerlinlMuskego Food Pantry collection barrel
will be up through the end of the month, and we are receiving monetary
donations as well as food items. The WCFLS PR Committee is working on next
year‘s program. They want to make it an annual spring event.
Computer classes are again in session. Introduction to the Internet, Search
engineslhobbies, E-Mail, Web search, and Introduction to Microsoft Word are
being offered.
We received $150 from WCFLS for Children’s Book Week.
We continue to rely on George Wolwark and Tom Treba, the city’s maintenance
crew to spot and fix problems. An evening power outage damaged the heating
system, and we are trying to re-coup the costs of repair from WE Energies. Tom
re-painted the library fencing. It was beginning to rust after only two years. No
problems were discovered in our recent fire inspection. Cleaning specifications
are being revised.
Within the past few years, Library of Congress subject headings have allowed
expanded use of genre headings for such topics as legal, medical or political
novels. We have also been able to add to the variety of spine labels used. Soon
adventure, historical, suspense and other descriptive labels will begin to appear
on new books. As time permits, we’ll do the rest of the fiction collection.
Quote of the month: “Whatever the costs of our libraries, the price is cheap
compared to that of an ignorant nation.” --Walter Cronkite.
