LIBRARIAN’S REPORT
AugusUSeptember, 2002
Waukesha County Reads is in full swing. APL met at Brookfield PL last week, and a discussion
of The Giverwas included. As of this morning, 56 copies were checked out. Penny and I
prepared a “readalike” list of “companioii” books. The display is very attractive, and Penny also
did an explanatory brochure. The New BerlinlMuskego Food Pantry collection barrel will be up
through the end of October.
Back-toSchool and Dinosaur displays have just come down. The 9/11 display was restrained,
but affecting. A display highlighting our many new interior decoration books is up, as is one
“celebrating” banned books week. Speaking of being suppressed, we are planning a display
honoring the 350th anniversary of Galileo’:s death.
Arthur and Karen Doyle gave the library mloney to buy Wisconsin gardening books in memory of
Bernard Boehm.
Fall programming is underway. The children’s librarians are planning next year’s summer
reading program, and again, we will get $:IO0 to put toward the reading folders, posters, etc.
Technical services meetings for the BMW group continue. Linda got an idea of how OCLC
works: many changes for the behind-the-scenes workers.
Mary has done early fall new books’ lists. Not counting 2002, we have added some 30,000 new @ books in the past five years. Although our customer comment forms have not mentioned “old”
books lately, a recent survey on customer satisfaction, funded by a WCFLS grant, did.
Last month’s artist of the month, Janet Wood, was very popular. She did pressed flower
paintings.
The microform machine will be delivered !;hortly. It will be in the conference room for a few
weeks, until reference staff members have an opportunity to become familiar with how it works.
Quote of the month: “In science, one tries to tell people in such a way as to be understood by
everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry. it’s the exact opposite.” --Paul
Dirac (British physicist).
