L1BR:ARIAN’S REPORT
JuIlylAugust, 2002
After a busy summer, staff members are catching their breath and girding their loins, so to speak, for fall’s
business. Hats off to Alex Quijano from the city’s IS department, who has finished repairing all 30 public access
COmpUterS. He and Jane have also plugged some loopholes within the “put-it-back-the-way-we-had-it-set”
software.
YOU may have noticed that the back and sides of the library’s landscape received a buzz cut. Tom Zagar, the
City’s conservation coordinator and urban forester, will be working with Jane Genzel of our staff on the
following plan:
Keep area flail mowed thN this season
Next Spring the area will be treated with Roundup herbicide before prairie plants green up. but after most
”cool season’’ plants and weeds begin growing. This timing will be crucial to maintain all the ”good plants’’
Sometime in May the area will be overseeded with a greater diversity of prairie species
A demonstration area will be planted with ponted prairie plants to give people an idea of the finished product
Flail mowing will likely be necessary next yeair to help seedling prairie plants compete with the weeds
By 2004, prairie plants should begin to dominate the weedy stuff
training on the state’s new interloan system. The WCFLS Board met here at Muskego.
APL, the PR Committee, and the Interlibrary Loan Committee met this month. The ILL librarians received more
Summer programs.and computer classes wound up, and preparation is underway for the fall. “Waukesha
County Reads” begins September 16m, featuring The Giver. We will be collecting for the New Berlin-Muskego
food pantry, playing on the title, to promote the book and one of its themes.
eenny will be a guest storyteller at a UW-M celebration honoring Curious George. The artwork of H. A. and
Margaret Rey will be on exhibit at the Golda Meir Library, and many events are planned. The Webpage address
for the event is www.uwm.edu/News/PR/02.08/curiousqeorqe.html.
Planning is underway for the student art auction we had discussed several months ago. The date is Sunday,
April bm.
I completed my first on-line course, “Virtual Collel;tion Development.” It was extremely intriguing, and will be
helpful as we continue to make decisions in the area where print and electronic formats intersect.
Quote of the month: “The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference
between lightning and a lightning bug.”- Mark Twain.
