0 LIBRARIANS REPORT
MaylJane, 2002
The summer reading program started June 10. Over 350 children and adults came to see The
Truly Remarkable Loon (a juggler); so marly that we had to use the library rather than meeting
rooms. Some programs are gifts of WCFLS. and others are gifts of the Friends. They include a
Harry Potter magic show, the Atwood Players, and The Pocket Lady, a storyteller.
The library received $3,570 from the TEAC8H grant for the computer classes Jane teaches. She is
adding a basic class on Microsoft Word.
The FOL asked me to write a letter to the S:un about our author visit, and it was printed on May
30.
Our 2002 budget funds were released; hence the large treasurer’s report tonight, as we work to
get the money spent, in hopes that all item ordered will arrive before December 31
Linda and I attended two sessions of county long-range library automation planning. While we
would all like to share one system, one caialog, and a common library card, due to funding, that
does not seem likely.
We received a letter of assent from Waukesha Public Library to our request for a shared services
proposal. We are in line to receive a fl0,ODO grant to put toward this shared system, and I am
working with Joe Sommers from the city’s IS department, and Mellanie Mercier from WCFLS. to
gather information necessary to write it. 0 Mary has finished a massive review of our patron database, culling duplicate and expired cards.
Charlene and I are working on the cataloging backlog, which accumulated while we were
planning the new building, so that when we move to the new system, as many holdings as
Charlene has also been weeding. Most of the 600s are done, with 700-949 finished.
possible will be in machine-readable format. While she has been cataloging non-fiction,
While technology takes much of our time, ‘we do not forget the book angle. Mary has created
summer new books’ lists. The Book Page, a Friends’ gift, is very much enjoyed, as are the
displays (did you catch “grilling?”) and the “staff picks” area.
Our (from Russ) quote this month comes from the mordant wit of Ambrose Bierce’s The Devil’s
Dictionary: “The covers of this book are too far apart.”
