LIBRA.RIAN’S REPORT
FebruaryIMarch, 2002
Despite the weather and % of the ex.hibitors being no-shows, the Friends’ fair still
brought in about $7,000.
The usual programming continued this month. We are preparing for the visit of author
Franny Billingsley on April 25Ih at 6:30 in the library.
The children’s and PR committees met in March, as did the catalogers and APL.
Brookfield is close to reaching an agreement with Waukesha to share the SIRS1 automated
system, and we are sitting in to prepare for our turn, next year. We are awaiting pricing
information from WILS, to see if OCLC is competitive with Bibliofile. We have always
considered it a vastly superior product, but the price has also been “vastly superior,” tool It
would be an advantage to share the same bibliographic utility, since Brookfield, Muskego and
Waukesha (BMW) intend to share the sam:e catalog. Excitingly, Lakeshores Library System is
also going with SIRSI, so Waterford-area residents who also use Muskego will see the same
type of catalog. We may be eligible for a :)lO,OOO grant because of this shared system project.
Gifts this month included $75 dollalrs from the Van Valzah family in memory of Lauren
Humer. We also received $100.00 from the Gygax family to purchase headphones for the
New books lists were put out. Despite the need to purchase sparingly, until we are sure
there will be no mid-year budget cut, we have been purchasing best sellers.
The displays continue to be very popular. Most are Tina’s “brain children,” and have
included such diverse topics as angels, Olympics, and Harlem. March was honored with the
traditional rainbow and pot 0’ gold for St. Paddy’s, but also with Shakespeare, as in “Beware
the Ides of. . .” March also commemorates the 100’” anniversary of the teddy bear.
A book quote from Russ: “This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be
thrown with great force.” Dorothy Parker..
