LIBRARIANS REPORT
JanuarylFebruary, 2002
Several workshops or training sessions were held this month. WISCAT and EBSCO Host classes were held to
acquaint staff with new features of these products; also “Virtual reference,’’ at UW-M. “Writers on Reading,”
held at Weyenberg Library in Mequon, was one ol the rare opportunities to focus on our first love-books.
APL met here at our library. The PR Committee chose Lois Lowry’s The Giverfor the first “Waukesha County
Reads,” to be held this fall. The first ”Waukesha County Children’s Choice Award” went to J.K. Rowling’s Harry
Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, and to Newbery .Award winner Holes, by Louis Sachar.
We received gifts from the Muckey 4-H and the Waukesha Catholic Schools in honor of Penny’s storytelling and
class presentations. These were gifts to her, which she donated to the library, as she felt that some library time
of the librarians featured in a recent JoumalSenlinelarticle on teen reading groups.
had been used for preparation. Penny also represented us at Lakeview’s kindergarten registration, and was one
art projects. Darlene Adam is back volunteering with us, doing WISCAT data entry, now that the new WISCAT
Several pleasantries this month: St. Leonard’s smt thanks (and brownies!) for our displaying their children’s
package has been implemented. Former staff member Melissa Matz sent a donation to the library in honor Of
her dad’s birthday, and asked that we purchase new mystery books in his name. The Big Muskego Tractor Club
donated two massive and colorful volumes on thNsir hobby. The FOL has donated $1,142.80, which includes the
cost of the library’s ad in the “MWC Directory,” the annual subscription to “Book Page,” and some of the
upcoming summer reading program materials. They are also helping to finance the visit of children’s author
Franny Billingsley. She will be our guest on Thulrsday evening, April 25m. ar the “grow up” category. we have noticed that some of our meeting room users are monopolizing the kitchen
torage space, and I am told that only the VFW asked to store items there permanently. A flier has gone up, and
we hope it will gamer attention.
Mary has prepared “new books” lists. Our displays and “Staff Picks” areas continue to be very popular. We
have put up the MPUMcDonald’s “Milwaukee Reads” poster, and our copies of the chosen book, Guterson’s
Snow Fahg on Cedats, are checked out. However, Waukesha County libraries were informed on a Friday
about the program, which began the following Monday, so even though publicity says a tencounty area is
reading, there is no feeling of ownership. APL communicated its dismay to MPL in a very diplomatic letter, and
announced our fall campaign, hoping to lead by example.
We have lost another good friend to the library with the death of 98-year-old Dr. Nina Mueller, who had been a
volunteer in the 1980s. As a female MD in the 19:IOs, she was unusual for the times, and had a long career in
public health. Her wry humor and sharp wit was very much appreciated by our staff.
I will be on vacation the week of March llm.
