LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
AugustlSeptember, 2001
The interlibrary loan committee and APL rnet last month. Children's librarians attended a
workshop at the new Waterford library on school-library cooperation. Claudia conducted an in-
service here for our staff on sewing patrons with special needs.
Programming has resumed. Computer workshops, storyhours, Lapsitters, and the reading
groups are all meeting as usual. Penny has been attending staff meetings at the schools to
promote our services to teachers and students.
Waukesha Public Library is preparing a proposal for a shared automation system between
Brookfield, Muskego and Waukesha. An automation retreat will be held in October to discuss
long-range system-wide automation planring. The e-book readers are being tested by staff, and
will be able to be checked out soon. We have begun to get a daily report from the Bess (filter)
proxy server, which tells us the top ten blocked sites, how many individual users, how many
sites they visited, and the most-used sites. I haven't had time to study them in detail, but at the
very least, I should be able to get a monthly user count again.
We received a fmdollar check, as partial reimbursement from the library system for tuition.
Mary has completed work on lists of large print books and bookson-tape, which are especially
useful with homebound patrons. She has also done new fiction and non-fiction book lists.
We are reminded through a story in jsonline.com that emails between library board members or
between staff and board members need to keep open meeting and open records laws in mind.
For example, issues to come before the board can't be discussed via email.
We received a thank-you from Denise Krall for our help raising funds for Destination Imagination.
Candace West, from the police department, was also spearheading an effort to raise funds for the
September llm fund, and we had a collecting jar on the circ desk for a week. We also had the list
from the Journal Sentinel at the reference desk of places to donate, for those who wished to
help.
Our display this month is courtesy of Marg Graff and the Rosemaling Association of ysconsin,
whose artistry has evoked a great deal of admiration.
Meeting room reservations are underway for 2002. We have blocked out room #3 in anticipation
of the coffee shop, but will use it for conflicts or overtlows in the meantime.
This is Banned Books Week. We have approximately 41 of the top 45 banned books, which is not
surprising, when one considers they include such books as the "Harry Potter" series, and
Newbery winner A WRINKLE IN TIME.
I will be on vacation on and off through October llm.
