I LIBRARIAN’S REPORT
OctoberlNovember. I997
Lolly Bonnell, who worked as a desk attendant for many years and retired to Florida, passed away
there last week. Many of you will remember hmer as a gracious lady, who never lost her calm manner
with library customers.
Staff are continuing to work with patron cards, and completed one day of training on the Circulation
system. Over the next month, they will be checking out materials, letting them become overdue,
dealing with fines, check-in, placing reserves, and becoming familiar with the arrangement Of the
various circulation function screens. Barcodes have been run for 1996 and 1997 magazines, and
these are being applied to the issues. 1995s will soon be replaced with 19989, which is why we
waited until now to run these barcodes. Phyllis is learning how to produce the individual barcode
needed for each 1998 issue as it arrives, which is a different procedure from the “batches” we
normally run. We are on target to bring up tho system in January.
The staff and I have been meeting weekly to revise the Building Program Statement. Jerry Olson and
Charlie Kurt will be in next week to continue planning.
APL meetings have continued to focus on cro:ss-over borrowing. A special meeting was held on that
topic, and another will take place December 4’to discuss circulation procedures and policies.
Several library boards have decided to recommend to their municipalities that the cross-over charge
not be paid. At this point, Muskego and Menomonee Falls, the two municipalities owing the least
money, have not taken formal positions. We vrill need to place this on the agenda soon.
aharlene attended a workshop on serving an aging population, and Penny attended an ETN on best
books for children.
Lapsitters, the three-year-old storyhour, is running now, as are all other regular adults’ and
children’s programs.
I finished teaching my “Library Materials for Children” class, which had been running on Saturdays,
and have the spring semester off.
I will be on vacation the week of December 8”.
