LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
August, 1993
e We did not have the usual August slow-down, so we have begun the
school year farther behind than ever.
The Summer Reading Program had 1,054 participants. Regular storyhour
sessions for 4-6 year-olds begin September 23.
Penny and Holly went to Waukesha to view new devices which allow
partially-sighted and blind people access to the printed word. These
included magnification projectors and computer-assisted voice
synthesizers/scanners. Waukesha Public Library received a
demonstration grant, and WCFLS has plans to apply for funds at the
completion of the grant for the deaf and hard-of-hearing.
Muskego hosted the APL meeting. Penny did a fine job of preparing
refreshments for our guests.
Phyllis attended an ILL meeting at Waukesha. The system will be
replacing our interloan computer equipment in 1994.
Linda and Elaine went to a workshop on audio-visual material
processing.
WCFLS is being required by the county to do long-range planning in a
we tried to forecast trends which affect public library service and
new way, and Charlene and Holly went to a "focus" group session where
meet future needs. These conclusions should be useful to the system
the changes at the system level which will be necessary in order to
when they write their plan of service.
We will be a resource for Park E, Rec's "Ready, Set, Grow" program,
which targets three year-olds. Penny met with the coordinator and
described materials available.
Muskego 4-H was featured in the display case last month. The Creative
Photographers' Guild will mc'unt a show in September.
WCFLS libraries will be taking part in a joint grant with MCFLS and
the Milwaukee Zoological Society. This will result in $300.00 for us
to buy children's books relating to the environment, and some guest
programming for children at no cost to us.
Holly will be gone a great deal this fall, as she has not taken any
vacation time so far this year.
In the "It would have been fun, but..." category: Holly was invited

Ray and Holly reported on meeting with Mayor DeAngelis. Mayor and Alderpersons are not receptive to a request for funds at this time.
Discussion on where we go from here. Statewide building average is $70-80 square foot. Milwaukee average $100. This is for the building only!
Decided to write a formal needs assessment with a focus on service population.
Ruth and Holly will work on Public Library Space Needs booklet steps 1-3. We should reread chapter 2 of Wisconsin Library Building Handbook for the next
meeting.
