LIBRARIAN'S REPORT
July 7, 1987
June's high circulation, (10,7ClO), combined with our shortness of
staff, has made for a hectic month. We are glad to be almost at
full staff once again.
The summer reading program started June 8th. Over 300 children
have registered so far. A calendar of events is being prepared
each month. Our "Parachute to the Land of the Dinosaurs" program
was so popular, Melissa and Teri have to repeat it to handle the
people who were turned away the first time. Bedtime storyhour was
offered again, and the system vi11 be doing six programs this
summer. 121 children attended programs in June.
Melissa attended a meeting at Cconomowoc to work on an
audio-visual'equipment union list. She has been taking a
storytelling class at UW-Waukesha, and has passed her A-50 course.
We have been informed that Ruth Leichtfuss, Harold Sanders and
June Wolf have been re-appointed to the library board. The staff
and I enjoy working with you, and are glad you are continuing in
the service of the library.
Charlene and I have been rushing to finish transferring subject
headings to our new Sears books. Sears is the authority we use in
assigning subject headings when cataloging. Because language and
terminology change, every five years we receive an updated book.
The process of making the change requires heading-by-heading
comparison, and is hard on the eyes. It is particularly
frustrating because it is one of those jobs we could do better and
faster if we were automated.
Dr. Mary Jett-Simpson taught a course here for district teachers
interested in integrating children's trade books into the reading
curriculum. I was asked to serve as a resource person, - being
available to assist teachers in the creation of their units,
giving an introduction to OUT library, making a bibliography of
children's literature reference books, speaking about the special
features of each, and doing a booktalk on fiction for the
intermediate age child.
Charlene and I attended system budget meetings, and will be a part
of the long-range planning committee which grows out of it.
Our newest staff members are Pe.nny Hintz and Elaine Wojciechowski.
They fill the positions formerly held by Lolly and Marla.
