Practical suggestions from the workshop: it woLld be well for all board members to brush .up on actual powers Of library trustees as created by state statutes. We are individually and collectively responsib1.e for a lot of things -- those we do and those we fail to do. This is an age of "sue-ers". Ask the Council to meet with us: have a PR session. Show them what the library looks like and what we do. Have them look at our Library Board policies. Have an up to date Manual for trustees. Every member of the Board should have one. a. KUSKEGO PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD . ~~ Ruth Leichtf uss e a LIBRARIAN'S REPORT April I, 1986 Circulation was over 11,000 in March. The increased visibility of magazines and records has meant increased circulation. We have begun to use the "problem" form, and have included requests we couldn't fill, as well as complaints and complements. Waukesha Public Library has adopted what I think is an excellent procedure on handling "problem" patrons. We have very little trouble here, but I would like to see such a policy/procedure adopted, and will place the matter on next month's agenda for discussion. Angela Ferber and Holly have been asked to serve on the WCFLS Budget Committee. Holly has received one of the coveted "Annual Agony Awards" from WCFLS for having submitted a perfect state annual report. After three years, I finally got it right! Phyllis Maki attended an Interloan meeting at Waukesha. The daily "message" we send around the county has grown amazingly, and procedures need to be refined to cope with the increasing volume. Linda Brown and Holly attended a meeting of the RFI group. We have begun to discuss cost-sharing formulas For automation. We had the pleasure of having Park and Recreation Intern Laurie Fischer observe the library for a day last week. We explained our jobs, budgeting, and how we see our- selves interacting as a unit of city qovernment. AB 537, which started life as the stat:e-wide borrowing bill, has been passed, and is due to be signed on April 2nd. I have not seen the final language, and so I do not know whether we should be rejoicing or bracing for a blow.
