MUSKEGO PUBLIC LIBRARY BOARD
Members present: Christenson, Leichtfuss, Buhrandt, Matheson, Turzinski, Wolf, De Angelis, and librarian Sanhuber. Excused: Mimier and Roberson.
The meeting was called to order by President Christenson at 7:30 P.M. The agenda was approved with a motion by Wolf and second by Turzinski, as were the minutes of October 2, 1984. (Motion, Leichtfuss; second, Christenson.) The next meeeting will be
December 4, 1984. The Treasurer's report was approved in the amount of $14,114.08 for monthly expendses and $773.15 for WCFLS account
expenses. (Motions, Wolf; seconds, De Angelis and Turzinski
respectively.) A statement of interest on the library board gift account in the amount of $37.91 was received from Hales Corners
State Bank. There were no guests.
Under Old Business, June Wolf reported that the Friends of
Muskego Public Library bakesale raised around $230.00 which has been
donated to the trust fund.
....
The trust fund has been the recipient of monies given in
memoriam, which has allowed the purchase of a second $1100
certificate of deposit. A complete list of donors since the
establishment of the fund has been prepared, and will be sent to the
Sun for publication. Under facilities study, it was reported that
the library office has been arranged to allow the placement of
another desk, and problems with traffic patterns in the circulation
area have caused some shifting as well.
The Librarian's Report was read. (Copy attached.)
A reciprocal borrowing agreement between WCFLS and
Lakeshores systems has been under study for some time. If adopted,
this may mean a small source of income for Muskego, in reimbursement
for services offered to out-of-county residents. As of this
meeting, it requires approval from the library system boards and
county boards in both Waukesha and Racine. If approved, a trial agreement would begin January 1, 1985, and be reviewed in six
months, and thereafter, annually.
Under Automation, Ray Christenson reported on the automation
committee's efforts toward devising an RFP (request for proposal)
for an automated circulation system, which would list all of the
county's requirements of any vendor. The possible functions of such
a system have been listed and ranked in order of importance. The
committee is beginning to consider possible county-wide
standardization of functions and procedures for the purpose of
saving money in automation.
.-
The 25th anniversary committee has set the Arts and Crafts
fair as a tentative kick-off for the celebration. The fair will be
held March 24, 1985 at Bay Lane School. Ray reported that possible
plans include free balloons with an appropriate slogan printed on
them; a birthday cake; clowns; and face painting. Exhibitors would
be asked to donate a piece of art or craft to be used as door prizes throughout the fair hours. With each donation, the exhibitor might
then receive a free lunch. Also suggested was that an admission
donation of $1.00 be asked, which would go into the library trust fund. This admission "ticket," could also be used for the drawing of door prizes. Ray suggested that more money should be made due to the large amount of work that will be required to put on the art fair. The city hall premises have been reserved for the June 16th
birthday party.
The library's 1985 budget should pass without major
revisions, as it was virtually a no-increase proposal. At this
point it is not known if the city will set aside anything for anticipated automation expenses.
New Business: Due to the new year holiday, the Library
Baord meeting has been rescheduled to Tuesday, January 8, 1985.
Holly gave the board some background on the handicapped
regulations for federal revenue sharing. The Common Council has
asked for the board's reaction to the committee's proposals as far as they concern the library. The following motions were passed
after discussion: The immediate plan was approved, and will be
implemented. The single provision listed under 1985 will not be
adopted, as there is no appliance available which would ensure that books could be retrieved with safety. The present practice of
offering assistance to the handicapped will be continued. It was
moved (Matheson, Leichtfuss) that the item under "Prior to 10-17-86"
should be deleted, as this matter is not within the discretionary
power of the Library Board and is physically impossible at this
time.
The meeting was adjourned at 9:29 P.M., with motion by
Turzinski; seconded, Buhrandt.
Res~ectfully submitted,

Librarian's Report
November 6, 1984
The movers and I ifters have been at it again! We have rearranged the office
to make room for another desk, and we have changed the circulation area in a way we
hope will make moving around easier for the staff.
55 2nd graders from Muskego Elementary School came for a tour of the library,
a I ibrary instruction session and a chance to check out books. Mrs. Thelma Mackin's
class signified their enjoyment of the morning by writing letters to the library
staff in thanks. Angie Ferber and I were sorry we forgot to take a picture.
Cramming 55 kids into the children's section all at the same time is no mean feat!
About the assignment alert form: I have talked with the district reading
specialist, Jo Pirlott, and we are working on a plan to have book reserve forms
and envelopes available at the school I ibraries. While a teacher is investigating
the resources available at the school building level, s/he can fill out the
reserve form. The envelope can do through the school district mai I, and no postage
will be invloved.
The next session of story hour is almost full. Angie Ferber and volunteer
Teri Searling presented two Halloween storyhours October 31st. The children wore
their costumes, and the storytellers were also dressed up. As two good witches all
in black they hosted a very successful program, a "Slightly SPOOKY STORYHOUR" to an
enthusiastic response. A third session for the children of Happy World Day Care
Center brought total attendance to 124.
-
Charlene and Holly attended a long-range planning workshop. Offered by WCFLS,
the program was entitled, "But We've Always Done it That Way!" Thought-provoking
ideas which we can implement without any cost - other than time...
Our Gaylord charger and two of the typewriters chose this month to break.
It is said that bad things come in threes. I hope that's our three. Thank goodness
we'd budgeted for emergencies in the equipment maintenance account.
Holly has been working on another computer program, PFS. Personal Fil ing
System does just what it sounds like it does: files things and lets the operator
retrieve them by a number of methods, and also print out the data, arranging it
as desired. Used in conjunction with PFS Reports, it looks as though Holly will
be able to punch in the monthly expenditures and get out the budget account figures
needed when doing annual reports, etc.
At long last, the cataloging backlog is caught up - almost. A second weeding
and the first thorough inventory since 1978 is also virtually done.
Retrocon steams ahead. We have converted around 10,000 titles, and are
right where we told the state we would be at this point in the grant year.
The I ibrary assisted the JC's in their drive to turn out the vote by serving
as the call-in point for people needing rides to the poles.
- One of our staff heard a nice story about the library recently. Her hairdresser
related how her daughter had never been a reader until one of our I ibrarians spent time
with her, finding out her interests, etc. The child left the library with a stack of
books, and according to the mother, "She hasn't stopped reading since!" THAT'S what
we're here for! We made a reader!
