A- LIBRARIAN1S REPORT
October 2, 1984
Phyll is Maki and Angela Ferber attended two workshops at Waukesha Public
Library: one on medical reference works and the other on data base services. As
both Phyll is and Angie have some hospital training in their backgrounds, their
interest in the topic is helping us to see where our reference collection is
lacking. The workshop also explored channels of information flow b.etween the 1 i-
brary system and surrounding hospitals and educational institutions. WCFLS and
UW-Waukesha received a data base grant. For a fee, special ized information can
be retrieved from computer-searched data banks. Subjects indexed include recent
information on business, education, statistics, current affairs, law and govern-
ment, psychology, sociology and philosophy.
Holly was asked to serve on a panel to interview 1 ibrary technical assistants
for the city of Milwaukee, and she attended a workshop on preschool readers, held
at the Cooperative Children1s Book Center in Madison.
The October arts and crafts display is smaller this year, because our space
for hanging the artifacts has been replaced by shelving. Even so, it is sure to
generate interest, and Angie Ferber has done a nice job of making the most of
limited facilities.
-
The reference staff has begun to use an 'Iassignment alert" form which students
take back to their teachers when they are unsuccessful in their searches for informa-
tion for class assignments. Often an assignment is given, and the first students
to come into the 1 ibrary take all of the available materials. We hope through the
use of these forms that we can elicit more teacher cooperation and can explain our
services, such as classroom loans and reserving books so that the students do
their work in the library, and the books remain available to the entire class, and are
not used by just a few.
Retrospective conversion is still steaming along.
