Librarian's report
December 6, 1983
We have already surpassed last year's circulation of 108,997. As of November
30th, our circ. was 112,316. We1ve known we were busy. It's nice to see it
confirmed with statistics. Our October circ. was a record month for the
library: 11,593. 1,830 questions were answered in October, and 10,714 items
were shelved.
Speaking of shelving, the new shelves to fill in the childrenls section are
up. Many thanks to Linda Brown and Charlene Lenzen who did the shifting.
Also in the "thank you department," our gratitude to the staff, Library
Board and volunteers who set up for the booksale. (Pictures)
As you read in my mem9, we will be receiving 22,722.00 in WCFLS funds in 1984.
I have arranged to order a different printer, costing about 1,500, through the
system. This will enable us to make better use of our word processing capacity
using the Apple. At present, we can create documents, but the hard copy we
receive is unsatisfactory because it is difficult to reproduce. Although the
present printer is adequate for its intended purpose, inter-l ibrary loan, we
are using the computer for more functions. With a qual ity printer, we will
be able to produce the annual report, revise the I ibrary board pol icy or the
procedure manual, for example, and print a fair copy.
System money has also been used to hook up with Baker & Taylor, our major book
supplier, through what they call "BeTaPHONE. This will allow us to place a
book order over the 'phone, by entering the ten-digit ISBN (International
Standard Book Number). Instead of typing the author, title, publisher, date
of publication, price and ISBN, we simply enter the number, our order is
placed, and in 2-3 days we receive printed order sl ips. The time saved in
typing will more than repay the 325.00 annual fee.
As I told you, November looked I ike it was going to be a busy month, and it
was! We had five groups in, besides our weekly story-hour children. (Show
thank-yous. )
The WCFLS logo bags and decals are finished. (sample.) The bags will be given
to those who register for new cards, along with their Library service fl ier.
On December 15th, we are having a special program for interested adults en-
titled "Learning to Read Begins at Birth." This program is an outgrowth of
Holly's class work this semester, and all of the preparation for the program
has been done at home, in partial fufillment of the course requirements. The
session is aimed particularly at the parents who bring their children to our
storyhours, and will be given during story-hour. While Holly is with the
adults, Charlene Lenzen will conduct story-hour for the children.
