" LIBRARIAN'S REPORT - NOVEMBER 3, 1981 Holly Sanhuber, Children's Librarian, attended a recent meeting of the External Advisory Committee of the Cooperative Children's Book Center in Madison on October 16, 1981. She has been asked to serve a three-year term as a member of the committee, which is comprised of 15 representatives from the library and education community of the state. The EAC works with the Executive Board to guide the CCBC, one of the few non-circulating children's literature collections in the nation, a unique rescurce for librarians, tea- chers and scholars interested in children's books. The October artist of the month was a craft show in which a large group of individuals participated with a wide variety of their craft items. The October show drew an above average amount of publicity for the library. Several articles and pictures were published in the Muskego Sun. Arnong those was an article and picture of Martha Aldridge presenting a book on quilting which she and her mother, Mary Gum, donated to the library. The Wisconsin Library Association Annual Conferer.ce was held during thE: third week in October this year. A pre-conference talk on the future for libraries was given by Fred Kilgour, founder of OCLC, Inc. He indicated that libraries would become more active disseminators of information not only through traditional means such as the printed page but through electronic means such as home delivery of library services which is currently being tested by OCLC. Computers and especially microcomputers was the focus of a whole day of meetings this year. A panel which included sales representatives from Radio Shack and IBM discussed their products in general terms and the audience quizzed them as to the capacity of their equipment and various applications th2.t might be made to library work. Dr. Mohammed Arnan, Dean of the UWM School of Library and Information Science, gave a talk on the application of microcomputers specifically to libraries. His maiñ point was that microcomputers could do a variety of chores provided that the computer had an adequate memory capacity. Public relations was the central topic of another day. A panel of public relations experts presented ideas on how to promote library service in the community. They also gave us a unique idea of how the library is perceived by someone outside the profession. LIBRARIAN'S REPORT - NOVEMBER 3, 1981 (continued) During the awards ceremony this year the Maude Shunk Public Library in Menomonee Falls was given the Clarence B. Lester Award as the Library of the Year in Wisconsin. The entire staff and board were present at the ceremony. The last day of the conference a workshop on managing conflict before it manages you was presented. An interesting presentation, the elements in a conflict were identified and explained. Points of possible emotional conflict were also recognized. The day concluded with the WLA annual business meeting. Altogether, it was a valuable learning experience, well worth the time and effort.
