LIBRARIAN'S REPORT - OCTOBER 6, 1981
Mayor Gottfried has informed me that Mrs. Dibb has resigned from the Library Board. A candidate is presently under consideration. That subject will come up before the Common Council at its next meeting.
The Technical Advisory Committee for the Waukesha County Federated
Library System has been working diligently on a new funding formula for member libraries. As you will recall, previous formulas list Muskego as slated to receive either $14,000 or $17,000 in 1982. The
latest formula developed by the Committee will give Muskego $20,263. This formula is not the final word, however. Some adjustment may
be made before it is approved by the County Library Board.
The Friends of the Library steering committee, at its last meeting, voted to spend $1,400 toward an Apple II Plus computer (pending the
decision of the Library Board) and $100 for a party for the library's
volunteers.
Personnel
Holly Sanhuber, Children's Librarian, attended the 1982 Summer Library
Program Planning Committee meeting in Madison on September 18. Next year's theme will be "Through the Looking Glass."
Grant Fredericksen went to a workshop on September 16 at Milwaukee
Public Library entitled, "Mining the Mountain." This was a workshop on
government publications for the business community sponsored by the
Library Council of Metropolitan Milwaukee and the Milwaukee Public Library.
WCFLS - Interlibrary Loan Committee
In an effort to make the mechanics of communications less time consuming, the interlibrary loan committee of the Waukesha County Federated Library
System is investigating alternative methods of communicating each library's needs to every other library. The committee has examined everything from
intelligent typewriters to microcomputers. The Alliance of Public Librarians is preparing to make a recommendation to the County Library Board in the
near future on this matter.
WCFLS - System funds to Muskego - disposition
Mrs. Mimier and Grant Fredericksen appeared before the Finance
Committee on September 2 "to discuss the relationship;:;between the Library
Board and the city as it relates to financial matters." A spirit of
cooperation and negotiation was emphasized. The Finance Committee
appeared to be disturbed by the use of System funds for print materials and nonprint materials.
An alternative to purchasing materials with this money is to use it for obtaining an OCLC computer terminal. While this money will not cover the total costs of setting up the terminal, it will take us quite a way
in preparation for its actual use.
Final decision on the disposition of this money is not under a short
deadline. The System funds have been placed in a~.nonlapsing account on the
advice of the City atlditor. Both expended and unexpended funds must be
reported to the State however.
LIBRARIAN'S REPORT - OCTOBER 6, 1981 (continued)
One of the typewriters slated for purchase with the System funds
has been delivered. It is scheduled for payment on this month's
Treasurer's report. The other typewriter purchase awaits the decision
of the System regarding equipment for interlibrary loan purposes.
The typewriter is, thus far, the only expense charged against the
System funds.
WCFLS Newsletter
The first System newsletter has just been ppblished. Each Board
member should receive a copy of it in their packet of materials. It is a very informative issue with a greatl deal of information not
found elsewhere. All of the librarians in the county praised the
System staff for their excellent effort.
