from the book sale has been going well. There is a table in the Library

b. Art Prints: Because of limited space in the Library, and no storage
space for art prints, they conclude that the purchase of an Apple
computer would be more appropriate than an art print collection. The
cost is $2,600.00. The gift money from the Library and the gift money
from the Friends of the Library, sharing the cost ,.;ould make this
possible. The computer would he used by the Library Staff in the
morning upgrading their record keeping and bookkeeping problems and
to be used by the high school students and general public in the after- noon and evening. ~rs. himier suggest we get in touch with the Fri&nds

Librarian's Report - September 1, 1981
Waukesha County Federated Library System
The System is planning to publish a quarterly newsletter which
will include items of interest to librarians and those interested in
libraries, conference schedules, meeting schedules, news regarding
System policies or actions, events and news from local libraries,
and any other communications vital to smooth System operation.
A controversy has developed over the reimbursement formula to
libraries for 1982. A group of concerned librarians developed an
alternative formula to the one offered by the Technical Advisory
Committee. The dispute is basically between two libraries, Oconomowoc
and Menomonie Falls. The Committee's formula is being supported by
Oconomowoc while the alternative formula is being promoted by
Menomonie Falls. The County Library Board has reactivated the
Technical Advisory Committee in order to examine both formulas and
possibly to draw up a compromise formula.
1981 Summer Library Program Statistics
Attendance at the summer programs was very encouraging.
The park programs drew the following attendance:
Kurth Park
Lions' Park
Jensen Center
Horn Park Tot Lot
117
103
66
318
Total 604
The Family Night programs continue to be popular. There were 33 families and 105 persons registered this year. Total attendance
at Family Nights was 225. Total attendance for all the summer pro-
grams was 829.
Reference Question Survey - 1980
A survey of the reference questions asked of the staff in 1980
has recently been completed. A total of 5,774 questions were asked. Of that total, 75.1% were from people who walked in and 24.9% were
phone calls.
Adult questions accounted for 59.35% of the total with juvenile
questions at 20.5% and young adult quest~ons at 20.15%.
We were able to provide satisfactory answers to 69.31% of the
questions. We were able to provide at least a partial answer to
19.74% of patrons' questions, but we came up empty on 10.95% of the
questions.
The busiest month for reference questions was May. The slowest
month was December with August a close second.
Librarian's Report - September 1, 1981 (continued) 2
Muskego Country Fair Day's Parade
The Library participated in the parade this year with the Outreach
Van and walkers who passed out candy to the children along the parade
route. Staff members who took part in the parade were Angela Ferber,
Donna Schmid, Phyllis Maki, and Grant Fredericksen. Volunteers who assisted
were Jennifer Ferber, Bill Hess, and Marty Fredericksen. Our picture
was taken my someone from the Voluntary Action Center. Signs on the
van saluted the Library's volunteer groups: Library Board, Library
Volunteers and the Friends of the Library. Everyone had a good time.
CETA SYEP Program
The CETA Summer Youth Employment Program ended August 25,1981.
The participants this summer were Bill Hess, Debbie Harvey, and
Jane Kastello. Bill and Jane acted as pages, and Debbie was our
student secretary.
I have applied to the school year YEP program for three positions:
two pages and one secretary. As you may recall, CETA pays all costs for this program. We only provide training and some administrative
support for these young people. Funding for the program this fall is
somewhat uncertain but it is more optimistic now than before.
Letter to Nursing Homes
Following the August Library Board meeting we composed to the
nursing homes which receive Outreach services. We outlined the cutbacks
that will be made and briefly discussed our alternative plan to have
the Outreach service manned by volunteers. We have asked for a reply to our letter, but so far we have not heard anything.
Personnel
Holly Sanhuber, Children's Librarian, attended the "Contemplation
of Children's Services" reprise at the Yahara Center in Madison on
August 27,28. The 1980 survey of children's services and the report of that survey is the culmination of two years work by the committee of
which Holly was a member.
Public Relations
We sent a letter to each teacher and principal in the Muskego-
Norway School District. It briefly described the services we offer and the types of materials which we have in support of the curriculum.
Response to this letter has been very positive from both school librarians and teachers.
Holly, Charlene and I visited the librarians at the Muskego High
school recently. It was what is becoming an annual luncheon meeting
where we discuss mutual problems and ways of helping each other make
our jobs easier. This is an excellent method for achieving good school
and library relations.
