LIBRARIAN'S REPORT OCTOBER 7, 1980
Personne 1 :
I have selected three candidates for the position of Administrative Assistant/
Acquisitions Librarian. They are, in order of preference: Charlene Lenzen, Jane F. Arps,
and Margaret Adair Singer. I request approval of all three in the above order. This way
if the first preference does;.not accept the offer, I can offer it to the second one in
line without havi~g to wait a month for the next board meeting. They all hold MLS degrees
and seem well qualified. The choice was not an easy one.
The new person will start at the beginning of the earliest pay period possible.
In October, this would be either the 13 or the 27.
Staff Activities:
Holly Sanhuber, Children's Librarian, attended the 1981 Summer Library Program
Planning Committee meeting in Madison on September 12. Next year's theme, with materials
designed by Lorna Balian, will be "Merlin's Midsummer Magic".
Holly and Linda Brown, Library Assistant, will be traveling to Tess Corners and
Muskego Elementary schools on October 17 to do story-hours for two kindergarten classes,
Ms. Toni Strombowski arid Ms. Gloria Storm.
A group of fourth graders from St. Leonard's school will be touring the 1 ibrary
on October 8 and will be receiving instruction on how to locate materials in the
1 i bra ry .
I will be attending the Wisconsin Library Association Conference, October 22-
24 at Oconomowoc and working at the registration table there.
Library Board Questions:
In answer to Mrs. Mimier's question last month on the dollar value of books
cancelled due to the 4% budget cut: At Baker & Taylor we cancelled $977.19 worth of
materials. Ingram's cancelled backorders totalled $445.13. Total amount cancelled
came to $1,422.32.
Due to the illness of Angela Ferber, our outreach librarian, I have been unable to
gather statistics on the outreach program.
Boa rd mee t i ng.
I plan to have them ready for the November
Other matters:
Budget 1981: The Mayor has requested that one or two Board members be present
at the Finance Committee meeting October 8, 1980 when the Library Budget will be discussed.
The library is scheduled for 7:30 P.M. until 8:30 PM.
The Friends of the Library will hold its first general meeting on October 22, 1980
on the lower level of City Hall beginning at 7:30 P.M. A short business meeting will be
held followed by a sl ide program given by Bob Tui, Milwaukee1s Buck's photographer.
are all invited to attend.
CETA has funded one Desk Attendant for the year October 1, 1980 to September 30,
1981. Marla Sahleen, our current CETA Library Page, will assume the Desk Attendant duties.
The CETA Youth Employment Program has notified us that they have a candidate for a
job as 1 ibrary page. This is a separate program from the one above. This is to provide
a smooth transition for high school age people into the work force. We will interview
Chris Wierzba on October 8 for the position. YEP employees are paid directly from the
CETA office so the City has no bookkeeping burden. The paperwork involved with the
program is minimal. With very 1 ittle trouble we get some much needed extra page help.
You
We received a letter from Mayor Gottfried concerning the 4% budget cut.
The City will not make the transfers from our accounts. Each department will be
responsible for cutting the accounts it has previously indicated and to insure that
the amount cut will not be spent. May we indicate on next month's board report the
amounts cut so that we will have an accurate idea of our financial position?
