TO 'rHE MEMBERB OF THE MfJSKEHO TOWn BOAR.D
Attached hereto is a oopr! of the proposed budget for- the M'u5kego Ptlbllc Library
for the year 196~1?65. This proposed budget i::over-s a 12-mont,h po..riod instead of
the ll-month period for the pr-evious budget. This aocounts for part of the
Ulc:reased amount for sa.laries and the increase fo'r telephone, since these items are
expended each month.
An ana1,ysis of the budget proposal follows:
SAlJJUES:
Head Librarian: Anincr-ease of 25~ per hour for- the unscheduled
hours spent in library work........... .approx. $125.00
-_J
Asst. Librari~l~The Library Board recommends having the library
open for- one adili.tional period each week in order
to give adequate SerYlce toibe increased nwnber
I)f library users. Th~s would involve the services
of an assistant librarian for three additional hours
per week at $10 per l~brary period.......... $520.00
An increase in cler~cal help of two hours at $1.50
per hollI' for typing, filing, record keepinK, pro-
cessing of books, in order to keep up to date.
TwIJ hollI's at $1.50 per hour................ $156.00
Clerical:
Page: &1ploying a high school s tuilerlt for six hours a 'week
during the past year proved to be an econo1t11.cal way
to take care of the wQrk of shelving and some of the
filing. It is recommended that this page help 'be
increased from six hours to [lÍJ.1e hours. J hours
per week at 85; per hour...approx........... .$1.35.00
Cost of Operat~on: Book prices have increa.sed about 15%. This
accOlmts for the increase Ïll the budget for books.
We are not planning to buy a greater number of
books during the co:rt1lllg year.
other Costs
of Operation: The same amounts have beerl budgeted for stationery,
binding, travel, and memberships as were budgeted
in the previous year.
CAPITAL OUTLA.Y:
Additional shelving and filing cablnets are needed.
If there are any questions about any part of this budget, please feel free to
call on us for clarification and discuss~(m.
The Annual Report accompanying this budget points out that book circulation has
il1Creased 25% over the past year. Circulation figures reflect o~ a. part of
the increased use of the librar,r. ~ other services--reference questions,
phone calls, requests for information--requ:i:ring the time of l~brary personnel,
are not as easily tabulated. However, on the basis of increased. ciroulation alongJ

ANNUAL REFUR'r 1963-1964 MUSFÆO PUBLIC: LIBRARY
,,-
Gornmunity interest in and use of the Muskego Public Library continues
-to grow. 29,450 books were circulated in the past year, compared
with 23,550 books 1n 1962. This is an increase of 5,900 books, or
approximately 25 percent. Circulation figures reflect only part of
.the increCJsed use of the library- by the community. Many other
services, reference questions, phone calls.. are Qat as easily tabulated. --
During June, July.. and .August, books were a.gain circulated through
the Mill Valley and Tess Qrners school 11.braries. The circulat~on
statistics quoted aboye include the school circulation.
:Irull use has been made of the Free Traveling Library to prov~de
materials wmch are not in our collection.
The librarJ" has had the help of volunteers from time to time, for
the work of processing, filing, and shelving. There is some 11.mit
to the amount of volunteer help that can be utilized in library
operations, but wheneyer this help is avail,3.ble, and when it 1.5
practicable, f1Ùl l1se is made of it. G1.rl Scottts have assisted on
a group basis, and individuals have also given their time for this
work.
The Woman's Club elf Muskego has again presented the LibrartJ with
125.00 for the purchase of 'books. TbJ..s money 'was used to expand
the collection of books on history and world civilization. This is
the third year l.I1 whic h the Woman's Club has made this gift to the
Library. Other organizations have also expres~ed interest 1n helping
to build up the lib:rary.
Following is a list of books on hand as of 12-31-63:
96 volumes of reference books
2,656 adult books
1,819 children's books
""- For the coming year, the Library Board recommends having the library
open for one additional period in order to meet the needs of the in-
creased number of library users. ThJ..s will require the seI'Vl.ees of
an assistant libr@l'ian for three ad~t1.onal hours a week. Additional
clerical and page help is also needed l.I1 order to keep up to date with
cataloging and getting the books into circulation. The same number of
books will be purchased, but they will cost more 'because of the 15%
increase in book prices.
