COMMON COUNCIL – CITY OF MUSKEGO APPROVED
MINUTES OF SPECIAL MEETING HELD NOVEMBER 14, 2002
The meeting was called to order at 5:17 PM by Mayor Slocomb. Also present were
Aldermen Petfalski, Patterson, Le Doux, Damaske, Salentine, Madden and Clerk-
Treasurer Marenda.
Those present recited the Pledge of Allegiance. The Clerk-Treasurer stated the
meeting was noticed in accordance with the open meeting law on 11/13/02.
Mayor noted five candidates submitted applications to fill the unexpired term of
Alderperson-District 6. Applicants present were Thomas D. Kies, Anthony J. Koscinski,
Sr. and Eric G. Schroeder, and applicants to be interviewed by telephone were Michael
Bluemel and Allen L. Breitbach. Mayor advised each applicant would be asked a series
of questions, and each alderman may ask a follow-up question. He noted this is a
public meeting and applicants have a right to be here at all times. However, we are
asking that while others are being interviewed, the remaining applicants move to the
Mucky Room to wait. Once the interview process is complete, it is anticipated that the
members of Council will vote on the successor to Ald. Sanders. Mayor thanked all the
applicants for showing an interest and applying for this position. At this time he turned
the chair over to Council President Petfalski.
Ald. Petfalski informed the candidates that when it comes to voting, if no one has
received a majority vote of the Council members present, re-voting will occur until one
candidate receives the majority vote. If there is a tie vote, only the top candidates that
tied will proceed to the next vote.
The Aldermen proceeded first with the interview of Mr. Bluemel by phone, followed by
the interview of Mr. Breitbach, also by phone, then in-person interviews with Mr. Kies,
Mr. Koscinski and Mr. Schroeder, with each candidate leaving the room during the
others’ interviews.
Upon completion of the interviews, Clerk-Treasurer Marenda distributed paper ballots.
Eric Schroeder received a majority vote on the first ballot to fill the unexpired term of
David Sanders. The candidates were thanked for their interest in the position and the
City, and those interviewed by phone were called.
Clerk-Treasurer Marenda administered the Oath of Office to Eric G. Schroeder as
Alderperson of District 6. A ceremonial swearing-in will take place at the Common
th
Council meeting on November 26.
Ald. Petfalski moved to adjourn at 7:01 PM. Ald. Madden seconded; motion carried.
Respectfully submitted,
Jean K. Marenda, CMC
Clerk-Treasurer
