COMMON COUNCIL – CITY OF MUSKEGO APPROVED
MINUTES OF SPECIAL MEETING HELD MAY 15, 2002
The meeting was called to order at 6:01 PM by Mayor Slocomb. Also present were
Aldermen Petfalski, Patterson, Le Doux, Damaske, Salentine and Sanders and Clerk-
Treasurer Marenda.
Those present recited the Pledge of Allegiance. The Clerk-Treasurer stated the
meeting was noticed in accordance with the open meeting law on 5/10/02.
Mayor noted four candidates filed a letter and resume to fill the unexpired term of
Alderperson-District 7 due to the election of Mark Slocomb as Mayor. Applicants
present were Skip Bartes, Janet Knopick, Eileen Madden and Thomas Repischak.
Mayor advised they will be interviewed in alphabetical order, with questions from the
Aldermen and with an opportunity to provide some closing comments. Mayor requested
if each candidate would leave the room during the interview of the other candidate,
although they were not required to do so.
Ald. Petfalski advised that a series of eight questions would be asked by the aldermen,
alternating the questions among the aldermen.
The Aldermen proceeded first with the interview of Mr. Bartes followed by the interviews
of Ms. Knopick, Ms. Madden and Mr. Repischak, with each candidate leaving the room
during the others’ interviews.
Upon completion of the interviews, Clerk-Treasurer Marenda explained the voting
procedure. Paper ballots were distributed. If a majority vote is received by a candidate
that will be the candidate appointed as Alderman. If there is a tie vote, another ballot
will be taken with only the tied candidates eligible for the vote. That process will
continue until one candidate receives the majority vote.
Eileen Madden received a majority vote on the first ballot to fill the unexpired term of
Mark Slocomb. The candidates were thanked for their interest in the position and the
City.
Clerk-Treasurer Marenda administered the Oath of Office to Eileen Madden as
Alderman of District 7, and presented a Certificate of Appointment to her.
Communications
Ald. Petfalski announced that an e-mail was received from New York Times Upfront, a
national high school news magazine, regarding contacting one of the Teen Advisory
Board members, Joe Stamborski, about writing an essay on skateboarding.
Ald. Sanders moved to adjourn at 7:17 PM. Ald. Madden seconded; motion carried.
Respectfully submitted,
Jean K. Marenda, CMC
Clerk-Treasurer
