COMMON COUNCIL – CITY OF MUSKEGO
MINUTES OF SPECIAL MEETING HELD FEBRUARY 19, 2001
Approved: February 27, 2001
The meeting was called to order at 6:14 PM by Mayor De Angelis. Also present were
Ald. Slocomb, Chiaverotti, Le Doux, Patterson, Salentine, Sanders and Wichgers, and
Clerk-Treasurer Marenda. The Clerk-Treasurer stated the meeting was noticed in
accordance with the open meeting law on 2/16/01.
Ald. Chiaverotti stated that at the last Committee of the Whole meeting discussion ensued
on whether it was legal or appropriate for her to vote on her replacement, and upon
advice she had received from the City Attorney she stated her intent to vote. However,
upon further review, he has indicated it seems it is not clear-cut. She stated that it was
now her intent not to vote tonight. Ald. Sanders felt it would be beneficial if Ald.
Chiaverotti stay for the interview process.
Mayor noted the two candidates who had filed their application to fill the unexpired term
of Alderperson-District 5 due to the resignation of Ald. Chiaverotti, Lewis M. Lehman
and Rick Petfalski, were both present and would be interviewed in alphabetical order,
with questions from the Aldermen and with an opportunity to provide some closing
comments. Mayor requested if each candidate would leave the room during the interview
of the other candidate, although they were not required to do so. The Aldermen
proceeded first with the interview of Mr. Lehman followed by the interview of Mr.
Petfalski, with each candidate leaving the room during the others’ interview.
Upon completion of the interviews, a vote was taken by paper ballot by the six aldermen
voting. Mr. Rick Petfalski received a majority vote to fill the unexpired term of Ald.
Chiaverotti. Both candidates were thanked for their interest in the position and the City.
Mr. Petfalski was advised that he would take the Oath of Office at the Common Council
meeting on Tuesday, February 27, 2001.
Ald. Slocomb moved to adjourn at 7:05 PM. Ald. Sanders seconded; motion carried.
Respectfully submitted,
Jean K. Marenda, CMC
Clerk-Treasurer
