NEW BUSINESS
Discussion of Wayfinding Signage. Community Development Director Muenkel gave
an overview of the various samples of wayfinding signage (see attached). The City has
for years talked about implementing wayfinding signage in the rights of way along the
main roads directing people to local area schools, parks and municipal buildings, etc. It
had been adopted in the City’s 2020 plan as a formal recommendation to pursue the
installation of signage while doing the streetscaping for the Janesville Road project and
will be partially funding by the Janesville Road project funds. He had met with City
Engineer Dave Simpson and Parks & Rec Director Craig Anderson to outline a plan to
talk to the various committees and boards that might be a stake holder in this project.
They have identified the areas to implement the initial installation of the signs which
would utilize 28 larger signs and 16 smaller signs. The smaller signs would be used to
direct people to one venue such as a boat launch. The larger size would have from 4 to
10 entries on them. He presented 4 different options for the Council to review and
stated by using the same sign designer that did the City’s gateway signs, the City has
been able to keep the cost down which is expected not to exceed $12,000 for the 28
large and 16 small signs.
Discussion followed on whether larger text, eliminating venues straight ahead and
limiting the number of entries listed on the sign would make it easier for drivers to read
while driving 30-35 mph. Ald. Borgman suggested entries on the signs be grouped by
direction.
The consensus was that Director Muenkel would prepare a full size sample of sign
