Signal Upgrades – Pre-emption equipment for all of the signalized intersections in the
City. Sean has received authorization for the Bay Lane Signals, and the three signal
heads that exists with the Kohls Dept. Store. In conversations with Waukesha County
and several contractors, we are looking at next to nothing cost for the preemption of those
four signal heads. This is due to Waukesha County donating to the city because of the
work done by the City for the two Janesville Road intersection projects. As part of that,
Sean is looking at installing pre-emption equipment on all additional signals and
upgrading the pre-emption at the existing TC and JR to add an Opticon 700 pre-emption.
This system would allow the fire departments and emergency services, as they enter that
intersection, there is a strobe that comes through the existing lights and turns the pre-
emption light to green in that direction and turns every other leg of that intersection to red
so that they can freely pass through the intersection.
Looking to upgrade all additional signals except for the 3 legs of the Janesville/Moorland
intersection and Bay Lane intersection and to look at installation in 2003 of all of the
additional intersections approved by the Common Council. There is additional costs that
would be necessary for the Fire Department to install the pre-emption in their fire trucks
so that the emitters in the fire trucks can read the signals. Will be working with
Waukesha County Department of Public Works to install the preemption emitters for
hopefully less than the $88,000.00 we are looking at now. They are looking at an
$85,000 cost. We are looking for Waukesha County to bid some of this out for some of
their major work and hopefully we could get back approximately $20,000 to $25,000
savings; this is not guaranteed as it has to get through their Board. Waukesha County
will hopefully do the design.
