Re: Elected Official’s Salaries
Dear Mayor Salentine:
I was requested by the Common Council at its meeting of September 22,
1992 to research the following:
1. Can the Mayor’s salary at this time be increased for the
period of the Mayor‘s next term in pre-schedule specific
salary increases; and
2. Can the Mayor’s salary be increased by cost-of-living
increases during the next term?
My opinion is as follows:
1. I believe the most reasonable interpretation of Wisconsin
Statute 566.196 allows for the Mayor‘s salary to be
the next term determined prior to said term and in
increased by pre-schedule specific salary increases during
compliance with any other applicable statutes.
2. In my opinion, the Mayor, as a member of the Common Council,
pursuant to Wisconsin Statute s62.11, may not receive cost-
because I believe the same are prohibited by application of
of-living increases in the Mayor’s salary in the next term
Wisconsin Statute 566.199.
Sincerely,
ARENZ, MOLTER, MACY h RIFFLE, S.C.
